In Iowa there is an exemption period in the fall, when you can be overweight by a certain limit....I don't remember how much....maybe 2,0000 pounds???

When loading out of the field or from a farmer, there is no scale, so the DOT may give you leeway by 500 - 1,000 pounds. But anything over that will get you a ticket. A lot of times I am running on just gravel roads and maybe a short trip on a black top, so I may not be as careful when I am loading then, but I try not to be over by 1,000 pounds. There is a scale on the trailer air bags, but it is not always accurate if you are not on level ground.

I like hauling grain, as the loading and unloading is easy.

If I remember correctly, the most I ever hauled during harvest was just over 99,000 - payload. Grossing 128,000. That was with a 78" side Wilson. But, alas....that was in the good old days. They'd probably try to put you in the electric chair for doing that now.

I billed a 53.23 ton load of cotton seed and had the gin owner ask why I put 2 loads on one bill.

Told him his new loader needed some more training:biggrin_2552:

Over head bins:biggrin_2556: No where to off load :biggrin_25519:

I looked like a giant snow cone when I got to Valdosta:biggrin_2555:

We had to split weigh the truck. Man I don't miss those loads.

It's a way to get the harvest completed more quickly.

They are fussier about axles from what I hear now, 10% over on any group, and when the exemption goes off, they really know where to look for people not complying with the rules.

There is also something about the tractor being licensed for 80k. Some aren't.

Worse load I ever hauled Ever OverGross was when I hauled Grain. Had a Storm Coming In I was the Only Truck at Weigh Wagons that were Full zand the Combine Was full. Boss said all in the trailer. I weighed out at 130K Net at the Elevator. My tare weight with the Truck and Trailer I had was only 27K lbs. Called a real Lightwiegt tractor and trailer. All I know is that poor 290 Cummins sounded like a 318 Detroit that trip. We could not get back into the fields for 3 days with that storm and the Combine had 4 inches of water in the Grain Bin.
