there's many sources out there that talk about turning of engines when u are at truck stops to lessen emissions/idling, but what about when you are stuck in traffic?
I've heard from some that there's a difficulty in restarting the truck
sometimes.. which causes more of a problem than the idling itself
So what do u guys think about turning off-truck engines when waiting for a long time in traffic?

When I was paying for the fuel I always would shut it off if I knew I was not going to move for awile.. As a company driver I don't do it..
You should not give the idiots any ideal becuase California will have a law on this soon enough.. Have motorcycle cops nailing trucker in traffic jams for idling...bellydumper Thanks this. -
Yeah if you know the road is gonna be closed for a long time and its not too hot or cold I would. How ever if its stop and go then no I'm not shutting it off only to restart it in a minute or so. Truck starters are not that cheap.

Don't know for sure, but I'll bet you use more fuel in starting the thing than you would in idleing for a few minutes. IF it is only a few minutes.
What gets to me is seeing the local P & D guys leaving their trucks running at their stops. Here is a truck sitting there with the engine running the window down and the driver no where in sight. This truck is just screaming "STEAL ME!"EZ Money Thanks this. -
i do this often. i don't think it takes any more fuel to start it than you would idling it for a few mins being that the engine is fuel injected.

WHAT???? You are reviving an old thread just to argue with ME?
I can't believe it!
Hey, I'm just kidding with you. If you are comfortable doing this, and you feel like you can explain to your boss why your truck got stolen, I don't care!

Some of that junk on the road,
best leave it running.......
'specially near da portz !!!!jakebrake12 Thanks this. -
The most ware in a diesel engine is on start up when the oil pressure is low. Like it was said before starters aren't cheep, and if it happens to fail when your trying to start it up while sitting on the road, your going to look like an idiot. And cause a traffic jam depending on location.

It is a very bad idea to shut off the motor when stopped in traffic unless it is going to be a long wait (I would say more than an hour). Besides the wear-and-tear from the constant re-starting, there's a number of other problems that could leave you stranded like the starter developing a defect, or heat-soak which can affect the starter, batteries, cables, etc.

How often are you in a heavy traffic jam? cause I would think about your starter in the truck like that other driver above was saying
