I spaced out and almost drove past the southbound scales on I65 near Seymour IN one night about midnight. Saw 'em too late to pull in, so I pulled to the shoulder, and started to gather my bills and logbook. Scale officer came out, and put a spotlight from her car on me.
I walked up to the scalehouse, and in a very nasty tone, she asked "trying to avoid the scales tonite"? I said, "sorry I spaced out, not paying attention." Then she said "well why were you trying to avoid the scales"? I said if that were true, why did I stop on the shoulder, and walk up here? I would have been a mile down the road. Asked what I was hauling, told her (corrugated boxes). Gives me a long speech about the fines for dodging the scales, how I'd better not do it again, yada yada, and told me to get out of there.

Don't know about now, but as I recall missing the scales and POE in Wyoming could render you about five-hundred lighter....this was back in the late 90s....
-
Struck me as funny...she lectured you about missing or dodging the scales...didn't seem to care that you "spaced out"....

The "spacing out" fine must not be as hefty as the "dodging scales" hit... -
yep ive done simular thing here in Oz, just thought oh well, if they want me they will jump in their car and get me.
-
Ya it aint no big thing. If they wanted ya they,d have got ya. Ive even started blowing em when ramp is full
-
I'm thinking that the person inside put it back on red in preparation for the truck behind you. If they wanted you inside, they would have let you know.
-
Thats what I was thinking also. The OP was green lighted and they switched to red for the next truck. -
Day two of driving we had just entered Kentucky, I went through the scales and missed the stop signal. Trust me, they will chase you down if they want you. He came flying out like a bat out of he11. I did not even make it a mile and he pulled me over. Took my license and told me he would meet me back at the scale house. I got there and waited for a full hour for him to show up. My brand new truck had a total of 1000 miles on it and we are on elogs. I told him I was an idiot and he laughed and let me off with a warning. Said he had never let anybody off before that he had to chase down (I believe him) It will not happen again. I believe it would have been a $500 ticket.
