What's the difference? I will ask that question tomorrow, I am not fully hired yet.. they are running my criminal check right now, as far as I know they want me as a regular Line haul driver is what I was told.

I brought it up because if you are working for a contractor, most pay by 1099 and you have to pay quarterly which is not legal.

    Better to know in advance.

Well this job is straight from the fed-ex ground office out here in jersey would that make a difference? I did my application at their terminal.

1099 is like you driving your own truck correct, and not taking any taxes out? so you could either file or not file with irs?

You are not working for a contractor then.

1099 is reported to the IRS. You are then paying tax on the full amount with no withholding when you are actually an employee.

Your post led me to think it was a contractor who hired you.

I just started working for a contractor for Fed Ex ground and so far it seems like a great job. All local runs driving a single axle day cab going to customers warehouses picking up loads and bringing them back to the Fed Ex terminals. We get paid percentage and all the runs pay good. Pay is weekly and taxes ARE taken out. Hmmmm, if working this type of job makes me a lollipop then sign me up!

Wasp good luck with Fed Ex. I think you'll like it. The contractor I work for is great and has great people working for him and my manager keeps me busy and has been awesome training me. I also had to get my doubles endorsment and they took the time to show me how to hook up and break down the doubles so Id feel comfortable with it. Most of the time I just pull 53s though.

We have a few different ways of being dispatched depending on who we are hauling for. We haul for Fed Ex Ground and Fed Ex Smart Post. One of the dispatching methods is a phone automated system and it's a real pain to get use to, but I'm starting to catch on to it. The paper work is also much different than what I'm use to, but I'm sure the more I do it, the better I'll get.

CJ you don't happen to be around my neck of the woods? Are you getting beenies?

When you did the processing did you go threw one of the fedex terminals? Did you get a line haul position, if so are you running days or nights?

I also just started with a contractor for FedEx Ground out of the Columbus, Oh. terminal. He pays by the mile and I'm on a W-2. I am line haul on the wheel board. Out and back, home every night. Wheel board also means if it's slower, and no loads come to you on the wheel, you sit. Like I am today. So the contractor I am with is hooking me up with one of his contractor friends who has a dedicated line haul bump run to West Virginia Monday - Friday night. 450 miles a night. I'm also a lollipop because in 15 years of driving this is the EASIEST thing I have ever done. It doesn't get any more gravy.

Wasp, although I am employed by a contractor, I still had to go through FedEx Ground's HR department to get approved for hire. That meant filing out the app online in their office, waiting on the background check, waiting on past employers to return their verifications, bringing in proof of time off because I was in a car accident and lost 9 months of work. It is the most detailed check I ever went through. I did my road test and drug screen and still didn't get final approval for over a week. All together from the time I put in my app until I got approved was 2 1/2 weeks.

Yes Wasp I can get benefits although some contractors are different.

I was approved through Fed Ex before hire, and just like Biscuit said it's a pretty extensive approval process. I would imagine that is because we haul a lot of mail. They check your criminal background, MVR, work references and you do a drug test and road test.

I usually start work around 2 pm and get off between 12 and 2 am but again, that might be different with your contractor.

    HouseOfPain Thanks this.
