Rotella 15/40 for Detroit series 60?

I have always used Rotella T in my trucks
2001 3406E in my Freightliner, 1.2 million still running strong
2004 Cummins ISX piece of c**p EGR engine, 1.45 million, in the shop now getting rebuilt... #5 cylinder, connecting rod and piston gone. I don't think it was oil's fault, stupid oil pump gave up...Nobody believes that I got almost 1.500.000 miles out of cummins. Engine has never seen any oil additives, but I change oil on 12000 miles religiously.

Still, I got a good deal for in-frame...$9700CAD before tax, with new oil pump, water pump and updated oil sprayers...

Always good to know about those rebates! Makes one realize that the original price is way out of line to begin with. Kinda like the car dealers always coming up with all those rebates when you buy their car. They sure as heck are not losing money in the deal.

I just changed my oil. delvac. I also just read in h.d. trucking page 48. that the extended drain intervals are not worth the small savings accrued.I had 10,444 miles when I serviced mine yesterday.it looks like it had 50,000 on it compared to new oil. just a habit I cannot break.
when I first got my truck, I would change rears & trans fluid every 6 months regardless of miles. not I have weened myself off that years ago to once a year now. I just never understood , how the industry would change the recommended oil changes? I mean the engines are basically the same in over 30 years as far as the purpose of the oil is concerned, advancement in oil is not that advanced to go twice- 3 time as long as 10-20 years ago. i.m.o. I think anytime things last a long time, the industry finds a way to make it where you shorten the life of it or when they continue to remake the product, they make it inferior to the prior product. they want you buying or rebuilding new more often.

I change mine at 50K... still looks really good. Stays really clear till about 40K... no grit.
The secret is no idling... my oil samples at 50K come back better than my son's who changes at 15K... but he idles a little more.
I used to use Rotella but, again, Delvac with one galllon of Lucas comes back better at 50k than the Rotella did, with the Lucas, at 10K.
My next change will be with Amsoil synthetics.... I'll install a new bypass filter and shoot for 100K changes. -
My experience is somewhat different. In the summer, I change the oil every 250 hours and the oil is fairly black. In winter, I change it every 500 hours and it is still quite clear. I've always chalked the difference up to the fact that in the summer, the truck is started cold every morning and then several times a day. The cold starts create wear contributing to the colour change. I also run on quite a bit of gravel in summer and the dust, I feel, is the other contributing factor for the colour change. The truck idles a little bit in summer, probably about 2 hours per day at dead idle (750 RPM). In winter OTOH, the truck runs 24/7, likely spending about 7 hours at dead idle (750 RPM) and 12 hours at fast idle (1200 RPM) every day but, since the engine stays at running temp (no cold starts) and there is zero dust (ultra clean environment) the oil stays alot cleaner even at twice the hours. Been using Rotella for the last few years.

I do not idle. even when fueling. truck is off. I use delvac & 1 gal lucas. oil is black as coal at 10,000. some say idleing is the worst thing you can do to a truck. others say starting a truck a dozen times thru out the day is harder cause the cold, or dry starts. I dont know. I know after the initial warm up, when I do restart, the oil is warm & takes no time to hit operating oil press. I have never heard oil oil looking anything but black at 50,000 miles. unless your leaking a gal a day & adding it as you lose it.

When I did the major in September after a little more than 1,000,000 the shop owner told me he has never seen a cleaner engine than mine... and I've been doing the 50k thing since 900,000 miles or so.
Soot is what keeps the oil black... newer engine have more soot problems than my '95 E model has... maybe that's the reason for the black oil. I have about 40K on my present oil and it's still nearly translucent.
