Why not just go by a dealer and have him tell you by the serial number,
-
a couple months. I was going to call the dealer
-
The mack transmissions at the shop I work out of have rear supports. The peterbulits do not have one.
-
I drove a truck with a chain holding the rear of the transmission. The owner said the bolts had pulled out of the clutch housing.
I saw another rig on the shoulder beyond a rough railroad crossing. The transmission was on the ground. -
That spot would be so that you can put a transmission cooler on there. On almost every truck I have worked on/driven there has been no transmission crossmember. Now on some Volvos and Western Stars they have the the rear engine mounts on the front of the transmission.

No, you do not need the rear support. Your truck was built without them. If you needed the rear support there will also be brackets bolted to the frames for the support, or (bungee spring) to rest on. You would also have an 18 speed trans. Yes, the whole trans is supported by the bell housing bolts. Any one who has had the bolts come out are the ones who had the tranny out at one point and reinstalled without the mechanic cleaning the threads and not properly installing them.
BryRylanKW and Les2 Thank this. -
should I at least check if there tight? I spent the last few night replacing cross member bolts on the rest of the frame that because loose and spun....
-
Cleaned and Thread Lock applied before torquing.

HeavyD pretty much explained it but keep in mind back in the old days no one had a support or buggy spring on the back of the trans. We all know how rough riding the old spring ride trucks were and very few fell out.
No, actually the trans cooler mounts under the trans with the bottom bolts of the back case. Them bolts are for the buggy spring and I haven't seen a truck in years without one. I'm not saying they don't come like that. My brothers and my Freightliner has them and my dads KW and International all have them. We have 13 speeds. The one KW my dad had even had an 8 speed with one.
