i recently was assigned my tractor after 3 weeks with a trainer and i have to say that so far all my experiences with crete have been positive. a rental car from okc to lincoln, hotel room to myself, breakfast and lunch provided and i feel the best part are the folks at crete treat you with respect and are very professional. i was accepted to crete with 8 months of driving experience pulling dollar general loads at werner, but that gig was to physical for this old man. well, i just wanted to express my thoughts and say thanks to all who contribute their time and knowledge to this website as it has provided me a vast amount useful info that i have been able to apply while out on the road.

 

It's cool to read testimonies from guys who've made the right moves, such as this one from Haze.

#### I wish I could have had this website back when I started in trucking in 1995. My life would have been entirely different. Things would have gone a lot better for me, that's for sure. I would have made much better decisions instead of groping in the dark and relying on recruiters to guide me along. I would have stayed far away from the outfits I went with.

You guys don't know how good you got it. Websites to steer you to the good outfits and away from the garbage companies. People who post on websites telling you how it really is. The good outfits themselves. Yeah, it's nice.

 

I drove for crete fro feb.2001 till jan.2004.I was out of the DeLand terminal.I had worked for a "few"other trucking firms since my discharge from the Marines in 86.I never had it so good. Everything Bill my terminal mngr said would happin did happin. I was not lied to or misled in any way.In that short time I was with them I had 2 brand new trucks assigned to me and I had made more money then at ANY other job before. Life was very good.In nov. of 2003 I Heard on the cb about a company that was hiring drivers at over $100 grand a year to drive in Iraq.Well I went and spent 16 months driving in Iraq and Kuwait.We drove cab over Mercedes and flatbed trls.I had never done flatbedding before this. When I came home in aug.of 2005 I took a couple of months vacation before heading back home to Crete.They were more than willing to have me back that they even gave me another brand new truck.Now let me say this. Before Iraq I was of the thinking that flatbedding was one of the worst forms of trucking.I only lasted 1 month pulling a box van and I was craving the life of a flatbedder. I transfered over the crete's sister company Hunt Transportation(not j.b.)and life could not be better.I am totally happy here at Hunt(not j.b.)The company is so small around 200 total drivers both o/o and company everyone in the office's knows who you are as a person.I am in my 2nd truck with them. They gave me a brand new International when I first came over and I just turned down a brand new Columbia to get a used international.I really can't say enough good things about the creww here at Hunt(not j.b.)

 

Hey Steelbreezzz, glad to hear things are working well for you at Hunt (Not J.B.) I am working for Crete myself out of the Salt Lake Terminal. I sometimes think I might like to go to work for Hunt (Not J.B.) But I think I will stay where I am at for awhile anyway. Who knows, maybe I will see ya out there. I make it a habit to wave at all the Crete, Schaffer and Hunt (Not J.B.) drivers I meet along the way.

How often do you unload your truck at crete.

So far I have not unloaded my own truck, mostly drop and hook, have had a few live loads and unloads but never touched my freight as of yet. Not saying this wont happen but from everyone I have talked to it is rare.

 

SteelBreeze, it's good to read a post like yours. Your post is like a refreshing, cool mountain breeze. One gets tired of hearing of all the bad outfits and bad experiences/broken careers/ruined lives (at least temporarily) drivers endure at these companies that see labor as nothing more than something to be exploited today and disposed of tomorrow (or even tonight).

Sometimes it seems the trucking industry is nothing but one big landfill that truck drivers fall into inadvertently. The stink gets bad at times, for sure.

Yeah, it's good to hear from a guy who is really, really HAPPY for a change. And by the way, I used to work for Crete once. Best bigger company I worked for, and the second best overall I ever worked for. I'd go back to Crete in a second if I wanted to return to trucking.

I worked for Swift for about four months in 1995, and I appreciate Crete all the more because of that experience. There is one thing I fear when it comes to Crete. That company is still controlled by ol' man Acklie, the guy who founded it all. Last I heard, he is still alive. If so, I worry about the day he passes on. I'm sure if his family isn't involved, the sharks will come swimming in and one of the best companies around will take a nose dive.

 

Am in Lincoln today for B service and a liitle work on the bumper where a yard tractor backed into me.

Early this morning had just brougt in an empty trailer and saw an older gentleman "about my age" driving up and down the row like he was looking for an MT.


Waved at him to come over so he could take the one I just dropped. When he got there looked at his truck and it showed 44 years of service. Thought "this has got to be an error or a trick". Got to talking and he was working for the company that Mr Ackley bought to start Crete. He said he came as a part of the deal!!!

NOW, this has got to say something, although got a hunch he has Mr Ackley's home number.

 

I meet him about a month ago in lincoln. He actually gave me my driving test. Very very nice guy. I think his truck also said he had over 6 million miles as a professional driver.
