I have a newbie question. As an owner operator, could you live off of running freight strictly for brokers such as TQL, Robinson, etc., or do you need to have set customers/businesses in order to be successful? I am assuming the latter would be the most profitable route to take. Is that safe to assume?

cant speak for the USA, but it is likely the same. i work 100% for a broker and make a good living, haveing your own clients means more money per job, but!! you have to get enough work, you have to chase payments form the clients, you have to except that some clients will never ever pay you, but if you can find good clients that always pay and pay on time then YES it is more profitable to only work for your own clients.

Yes, you can make a good living. I look at my direct clients as gravy and looking for more all the time. It takes a little time to build up to the better paying loads with brokers. Some have time limits on how long your authority needs to be active. So this limits amount of loads in early months.
