It can and does happen and it is the reason any diesel engine that goes into a refinery or onto an oil or gas lease must have a positive air shut off.

Does a C12 have pushrods?
-
certianly do.
thier cam is set low in the block similar to how the 12.7 detroits are.
the 3406E/C-15/16 were OHC -
OK........

The guy I'm referring to says it CAN'T happen with engine oil, not flammable gasses in the air. As most have pointed out to him it can and does happen but some guys know everything and the guys that have seen it happen are making it up.

Ah... gotcha.

Of course a diesel will run on just about anything remotely close to fuel, especially older Detroits (which I have seen run away with catastrophic results). I've even seen them run in reverse (bet he won't believe that either). -
Yep ask a back hoe operator what happens when he opens up a natural gas line by mistake
I bet you have more engine damage now that you have been told you about the oil in the CAC.
-
I had a Mack mechanical E7 run in reverse once puffin exhaust out the air cleaner.
Did not seem to hurt it though -
Ive had my 3zj mechanical run backward 5 or 6 times over the years!!!
