Warning about Royal Express, aka team Royal, aka Crown Express, aka Smartway Express, aka Smartway Logistics. Cottonwood and Banning (CA) scales love this company, why? This company has had a poor rate and had been shut down by the DOT 3 times ( hence the reason the owner is always changing the name), but not the colors, not the logo, not the main terminal location, which, I believe, brings laughter to all the chicken shacks across America's Highways. Just say "no".

The smart way website says they use newer model trucks and rotate older ones out every 4 years .... I take it you drove for them and have a difference of opinion ? What happened ?

HAHAHAHAHA I drove for Smartway for about three months earlier in the year. I'll be honest, I had a pretty good truck, but it did have it's flaws. I drove a Volvo during my time with them. But most of the other drivers were driving older, rundown pieces of garbage around. Some of the company's trailers were the same way. The reason why I quit, was the dispatchers putting pressure on the driver to cheat. I never put up with their senseless BS! Larry the driver manager will lie to your face just to get you to stop asking questions. I will NEVER RECOMMEND Smartway Express to any truck driver. STAY AWAY from this company!

Total BS. I drove for this company 4 years; when I started they still had '90s models red Petes; and green freightliners, I still see those trucks pulling the same old trailers on the road today. I Just saw them in Fontana on Valley Blvd and Cherry Ave, last week. Oh, well, these guys have been to known to lie before, :biggrin_25523:
I'm also aware they have yet another name: CalBest: So, fair warning, its the same owner. (using his Son as a front but dad still runs the show, and same staff in Fresno...) I don't care what name is on the truck, the trailers still have the name SmartWay or Royal Express in green letters with the green crown.

LOL True story! I never had the DOT stop me while driving for them. I always kept my truck washed and cleaned. Maybe that's why they didn't bother with me. But you're right, Smartway is a TOTAL JOKE! I ran into a former driver that drove for them back in 2004. He said the owner is under federal indictment for income tax evasion and fuel related issues. A fellow trucker friend of mine, said that one Smartway driver was involved in a accident while driving through Chico, California during the summer. From what he told me, the driver went to sleep at the wheel and crashed. When did the owner use the Calbest name? It's just a matter of time when this company will be completely out of business. Serves them right, especially from the way they treat their drivers.

    Aloha, Stingray

I knew a driver that fell asleep at the wheel on I-10 Beaumont just past the rest area, she landed in the back of a FedEx trailer. I bet 70% of the drivers drive fatigued. She is so lucky to be alive. Oh yea, I know about the Federal Indictment, that's why he has his kid running the "new" company. Only the kid isn't really running the "new" company- everyone knows that.

are they really that bad? That sucks, since I'm getting on a plane this afternoon to be in orientation tomorrow. Well, I'll make the best of it. I've been a Mover/ driver hauling HHG for the better part of 8 years. I lost my job 3 months ago. It's been tough getting a driving job because of my DUI back in January of 09, and the lack of recent OTR. I'm use to older equipment though. I've hauled reefers before but it's been a long time. I was a new driver back then. A few things I'll have to get use to again. Also I haven't done much winter driving in the last few years, or at least not in severe enough to require chains. But, I have a whole summer not to worry about that. Larry seemed ok when I talked to him. Doesn't ANYONE have something GOOD to say about Smartway? What did I get myself into........oh well I already bought my ticket.

I remember a lady in Orientation at May Trucking that worked for Royal and ran into the back of a truck on I-5 in OR. She did admit it was her fault and said she was being pushed by Royal to cook the books or sit. and got impatient in traffic.

If your going to bump your head and drive refer I am sure there are better out fits then this one. I see them all the time on the 5 and they always seem to be in a hurry to get a ticket.

    phantombandit Thanks this.
