Yeah, home safe again. Seems I basically "outran" all the tornados (which ain't easy in a 64mph truck:biggrin_2559:).

But one thing I really noticed that when the Tornado Warnings come over the radio they give reference points as "such and such" county. Now that's fine for the folks who live thereabouts, but we who travel don't know where these dang counties are in relation to us.

What we need is some indication of where the twisters are in relation to Interstates, which direction they're travelling and roughly where they will cross said Interstates. This would certainly reduce our chances of driving directly into one.

I'll tell you my blood ran cold Wed night when the sirens went off just as I was passing by Lima Ohio. Thank God I had LaKitten on the phone telling me where the #### thing was.

I suggest e-mailing the National Weather Service and requesting that info be included in their warnings.

Hope y'all and your familys made it ok.

    Here's what I sent them:

I am a trucker who was on the road during the recent tornados. While I appreciate your warning system over local radio stations I would like to suggest the following.
When you identify the countys affected by Warnings, that does not really help we who are travelling because we seldom know where these countys are in relation to us. Could you please include Proximity to Nearby Interstates, direction of storm travel, and possibly intersection point. For example; "Approaching I-59 from the West near Mile Marker... (or nearest town). This would give us a chance to stop before driving right into the thing.
    Thank you.

    Here's their addy... http://www.weather.gov/

I'm glad you're safe. I know what you are saying. Last year when I come down through KY, them storms that flooded everything. I had three tornado reports in relation to small unknown towns. I knew they were close but didn't have a clue where they were. Looking at a black dark sky doesn't help.

That's when I zoomed out my GPS and found the towns and seen where the tornado's were in relation to the interstate. Two already crossed my path and one was going to cross my path in about 10 miles. I pulled over at the Calvert City Love's because of that report. So I was happy I had that report. But everyone doesn't have a gps. Then I proceeded on and got trapped in Nashville for two days, lol.

I am also wondering if thiers any Cb or scanner that will let u here the warning without programming it in ???
You know, like when ur trucking down the road jamming on the juke box. With XM they dont have any warnings like that.
I also dont know where the counties are either. They need a better system for us truckers...
OH i forgot, who cares about us anyhow. Except my wife maybe

yeah what do yall do to keep up with the weather? i thought with winter finally ending, or well in theory it should be anyway...my worries would be over, but tornado stuff freaks me out being in a big ol sail out there. i usually dont listen to the radio, but if they broadcast this stuff that will sure change.

on your gps, well i have a tnd, you should be able to see what county you are in. on the bottom bar you can toggle between street, next cross street, and city county state. unless they changed something havnt unpated mine in a longggggg time. i just always figured tornado warnings would be one good use for that.

Keep emailing them!! I have told them before, and I will keep telling them!!

Where I can, I do reference to Interstated and Mile Markers. But alot of times, I do not have time to go back and put them in.

Ok truckers what you think of this?? I talked to GuysLady via several private messages about what more we could do to help the drivers out in situations due to weather.

So soon as I get ALL the counties marked for EVERY state in my atlas I will post Interstates Involved for each warning. I will also post the Counties, Near by Towns, and Mile Markers that may be in the path of each storm. I will make it simple and quick to read.

The example shown below will be all that you will see on the page. Not all this other bull. :biggrin_25525:

    Example:
Tornado Warning: I-65 N of Birmingham
    Storm Moving: SW TO NE
    Counties: Jefferson, Blount, Cullman, Morgan
    Nearby Towns: Fultondale, Cullman, Hartselle
    Mile Markers: 261 to 238

Back in the "old days" we truckers used to be aware of our surroundings. We had these things called maps in our trucks that you could "read" and figure out where you were. It was all part of driving back then. And back then was only 10 + years ago.

While I like new technologies and being able to use them, when I hear someone saying
, I think that just comes from pure laziness to learn where you're at. Using technology to make life easier is good, but should not be a crutch replacing what you should be doing in the first place.

Really??? You know all the countys in every state you're going through? Well hello Mr Supertrucker. Why do I think you're full of it?:biggrin_2559:

Seriously though, most atlases I've seen are too loaded with extraneous info (parks, historic sites, Aunt Mabel's Moonshine Palace) while stuff like county name and lines are usually very faint. I'm sure as heck not gonna try reading them during a downpour. I suppose I could pull over and get clipped by someone reading his over the steering wheel.

Thing is, that NWS already gives such info on their tv warnings and such so I seriously doubt it would take all that much more effort for AM/FM.

BTW, I still can't believe how many trucks you meet in that kind of weather who don't have their CB on.:biggrin_2556:
