I was trying not to hyjack this thread with my whole story:
First of all, pre-hires mean NOTHING.
I had 3 pre-hire letters: Roehl, Swift, and US Xpress. I chose Roehl, failed the road test as my 'school' taught me primarily on automatics. I had a car accident last June and although no tickets were issued, the pre-hires from Swift and USXpress were not real (they never even looked at my application or the ATTACHED Police report). They rejected me for the accident. Failed road test at Covenant. Failed training at USA Truck. And the school won't help unless I pay another $1000 for a 40-hour refresher course (on automatics).
So, most of the jobs I have seen require experience of at least 6 months. At this point, I'm not sure what to do. Most of the experienced members of this board have told me to give up and cut my losses. Since no one has yet to give me the time of day, it seems as if the decision has been made for me.![]()

im sorry to hear such discouraging news bro. i realize now that prehires mean nothing. Except to help schools get funding.
Unfortunately it seems that the only way to fight this is legally. Either that or time/retraining/money. Guess the lesson learned from others is to never limit your driver career to just learning automatic. It's a shame that a school would even provide such a limiting education as automatic, because the truth is is that you need to learn manual double clutching. It's robbery actually. The cost of your education coupled with the worthless training is a tragedy. I wont go on because I know at this points you want resolution. I'm sorry I can't provide it. -
its disgusting that if your unemployed you get a free $5000. trucking school course paid for you but if u work full time and cant afford it because of rent and other bills the state says screw you.it should be the other way around. my taxes are paying for these unemployed people to go to school for free. BS

I only got $1500 NOT $5000.

I'm sure no one has say how important it is to never ever, under any circumstances lose it that license now that you have it, right? From the PTECH website in Pinellas County Florida:
"The CDL Class "A" learner's permit is good for only six months and only two permits will be issued in a lifetime, so it's best to acquire the permit just prior to the start date of class. "
That said and just trying to help; have you considered straight truck or van? There are several ads on Craig's List right now in the Albany directory. I'm sure competition is fierce but having that license is one requirement you presently meet that many don't. Good luck to ya. -
I guess in the past I would have agreed until I lost my job of 8 years because the business just up and closed. I've never been without a job and I've been looking for 10 weeks with 2 interviews and no job.
I was able to find state funding but part of the deal is you have to have a child depend on you under the age of 18, your spouse has to be working and you can't claim TAFT.
The idea is if your unemployed and can't find work that you can get help paying for school to better you and your families life.
You think it's BS till your the one that needs the help. Of course I'm sure there are people that take advantage of the system. -
For the record my funding was through the state and they will provide assistance to employed people.

I used the wia for my schooling and am working driving a truck hauling agricultural products. I make a base pay of $15,40 a hour with massive overtime of 105 hours a week!. Agriculture is exempt from hours of service rules. My 2 week checks have been around $1,600 after taxes. The WIA funding has helped me get a local driving job with a living wage. Hauling over 100.000 pounds as a rookie has been a little scary for a rookie but I found slow speed is a good thing!

I was laid off in April 2010 because my company was downsizing aka the higher paid guys were getting laid off. I was fortunate enough to be approved for the WIA funding. I also have a wife and a 7 year old daughter and have put in hundreds of apps and have been on 4 interviews since April. The WIA process is designed to weed out the lazy people from the program. There is a ton of paperwork to do and hoops to jump through not to mention the time it takes to complete each step. I was lucky and got "streamlined" through the process and it still took 1 month. You can still try and get approved or you can go to a company that will pay for your schooling with a commitment to work there for a period of time.
FYI not ALL displaced workers are just worthless people living off of your taxes and the government. Some of us are displaced for reasons out of our control and can not find work.TripleSober Thanks this. -
Nail hit firmly on the proverbial head!

I was laid off my job by a younger, single and cheaper worker. I've put in 112 apps since 9/2010 and had three interviews.
I just got word I will start CDL school on the 16th of May via the WIA program that I helped fund by way of being a productive, law abiding, tax paying citizen for the past 30 straight years.hebdog Thanks this.
