Who is running what for bypass filtration around here?

I called Gulf Coast the other day, and talked to them trying to figure out where to mount one of their units on my Volvo/Cummins ISX. It has been suggested that I could mount it on the rear of the sleeper next to the stack. Not so sure I like this idea...

I am wondering how much oil pressure this would cost me with close to 16 foot (or more) of hose running from output to where it would return back to my engine? Even though its a bypass and uses minimal pressure that's still a whole bunch of extra line head loss.

My Cummins ISX is just about the dirtiest engine on the market today, or so ive been told. So Im thinking it would be a really good idea to get a bypass system put on. Just not sure where to mount the dang thing.

I've been running a Spinner 2 system for about a year now. I like how simple its and the ease of cleaning once you figure out the best way to do it. I know the Spinner 2 is smaller than the Gulf Coast and my Pete has more room in the engine compartment, but I mounted mine behind the passenger side spring hanger for the front axle. This left me with about a 2ft feed line coming off the oil cooler and about 1 and a half foot return line going right back to the oil pan.

    SHC Thanks this.

I ran a bypass oil filter similar to the gulf coast filter,it used paper towel rolls and held about 3 gallons of oil.I lost maybe 5 pounds of oil pressure using synthetic oil.But when I used regular rotella there was no significant pressure loss.Filter did a good job of keeping oil clean & also oil temps were cooler. the only drawback to this filter was it was a messy job changing out the filter media.I had the filter housing mounted at the rear of my sleeper also.

I have been debating this myself as well. I am looking at putting a golf coast filter on my MBN cat. Just not sure if they really work.

I have the spinner 2 on a W9 with the Acert. And i have mine mounted in same location as PT.It is very easy to service and does a great job. It's a little larger than a gal milk jug,so it's easy to find a spot for it.With the spinner there is no filter, just a canister the size of a cereal bowl to clean and 2 orings.I service mine every 50000 miles but could go longer.

I've had a Spinner 2 on for almost a year now on a 12.7 Det and am very happy with it. Mine's mounted on the passenger side frame rail directly over the axle. I mounted mine on some extra rubber pieces, seemed to have a little vibration when I first put it on. Seems to do a good job of taking soot out of the oil, and like others said, fairly simple to clean.

I spoke with 5 other drivers who all put the Gulf Coast on their trucks and 2 of them had to change their oil every 4 months (did not have the oil tested), and the other 3 are still on the original oil from day 1. They said every month they have an oil analysis done and as long as it comes out ok, they just keep it in there. 2 of them have over 50,000 miles on the oil and it still checks as clean??? For the $1,400 installed price, that would pay for itself but I am still leary.

The good news on bypass filters is they all work .I did a lot of checking on bypass filters, from small ones to large submicroscopic filters to the spinner 960. I
Have 4 trucks ,the truck with the n-14 cummins has the spinner ii 960 on it.The one with the mbn cat has a luberfiner 750 converted to run Scott center pull paper towel rolls. On my dodge pickup with a cummins diesel has an old frantz filter that runs toilet paper as the filter media . The question you have to ask is how much trouble am I willing to go through servicing the filter. The 750 luberfiner is going to be comparable to the gulf coast filter as far as filter changing is concerned.( messy) The frantz is easy to service,The spinner ii 960 is probably the easiest to service. The only thing with bypass filters is you need to be willing to do oil samples to make the filter worth the effort.
If you change your oil at or around 12 to 15 k miles and you use a gallon of oil before a oil change the bypass filter wil stop or reduce the amount of oil used.
It does this by removing submicroscopic particles of carbon that finds it's way in between the rings and cylinder walls.

I use the Gulf Coast Oil Filter and mine has about a good 10 foot of oil line that I dont need. I took it off my old truck and never cut it down. I dont know why every one says there messy, if you take the drain plug out while the oil is hot it will drain in a few mins. I take the plug out wait a few seconds and get my oil simple. After that I grease the truck and trailer and by that time its drained, pop the lid pull a filter out put it in a bucket and do the same for the other filter. Simple, let the thing drain first!!
525000 miles and only 2 oil changes, first was the breakin oil, the other was after a hold down bolt and a rocker shaft broke, I didnt wanna take any chances on some metal down in the pan. I mounted my on the passenger step box, There is a pic of it on Gulf Coasts web site.

  11. I'm waiting to get home to put on a FS2500 bypass system. System comes setup with all the hoses, etc. to fit your truck, and mounts to the frame next to right steer tire. The filter elements (good for 10k miles) are about $26.00 each. I think it filters down to 2-3 microns. Entire kit $729.00. Will post results.
