Hello, I have been thinking about being a trucker for a couple years, I'm 22 now so I could'nt even try before. I applied with a company called P.A.M. Transport which provides 3 weeks paid CDL A training at a place in IN called C1 Truck Driving Training. They said after passing training I would have to sign a 1 year contract with one of thier partner companies (Star transport, USA Truck, Averitt, Expedite Solutions). Also I would be away for 2-3 weeks at a time. Would this be a good way to start a career in trucking? Good companies? Also was wondering what the limit is on how long you can drive per day. Thanks alot.

driving is 11 hours per day but you can not drive past being on duty for 14 hour.

I belive that you will find it hard to start with alot of companies due to the age alot of the companies require you to be 23+ so you may have to go to one of the not so good companies that you listed for a little while.

If you can stick it out at some trucking company for 1 year or more then you would have alot of doors open for you.

Does that mean after you drive for 11 hours you cannot drive again until 14 hours has passed, or you can drive a maximum of 14 hours?

    you can drive 11 hours

You can not drive once you have been on duty for 14 or more hours.

To be able to drive again requires a break of 10 hours then you will have 11 hours to drive again you can not drive/be on duty for more than 70 hours in an eight day period.

you can do what they call a reset the clock by being off for a 34 hour period then after the 34 hours being off then you have 70 hours again

hopefully logsrus will come along she is verry good at these questions.
she audits longs for some drivers and she can slap some cents :biggrin_2551:into me if I have mis stated anything

Sorry M Gassell one thing was stated wrong as many drivers feel this is true it's not.

You CAN drive more than 11 hours in a day. Lets say I start @ midnight, drive 11 hours, then I take a 10 hour break, I can go down to line 3 after that 10 which is in the same 24 hour day. Now them hours after the 10 hour break are being held against you when you start your next day so don't forget about them and don't even think new logsheet new day, doesn't work like that either. 10 hour break or proper split breaks is what clears out the driving time.

MGassell I think you said everything else right. Many driver think you can only drive 11 hours in a day and that is simply not true.:biggrin_25525:

ok say you wake up at 0600 and do your pretrip inspection at 0700.that means you have 14 hrs from 0700 to drive up to a maximum of 11 hrs before you have to park and take your 10 hr break.you may only getting 3 or 7 or even 11 hrs of driving done but you can only drive a maximum of 11 hrs in that 14 hr window before you shut down for your 10 hr break.if you start at 0700 you have untill 2100(9PM) to drive,be it 2 hrs or 11 hrs of driving.during that time you will log your fuel, breaks, naps if you want, loading, unloading, drop n hooks,DOT inspections, things like that, that are a normal thing for the day.when you shut down for the night you do a posttrip inspection and then take your 10 hr break.at the end of 10 hrs 8 of which being in the sleeper(or split which i don't know much about) you will be able to pretrip and start driving all over again.yeah like that other driver said you can run more than 11 hrs a day.pretrip at midnight you can run 11 hrs shut down at like noon if you drive hard,10 hr break pretrip at 2200 and drive and you can run like 13 hrs that day.depends on how you work it.I'm just babbling now.ya'll please correct me on the things i screwed up or made overly confusing.it's easy once you get a logbook in your hands and get used to it.C1 driving school makes you log every minute you are there so you'll know your logbook before you hit the road.happy trails, keep the bugs off your glass and the bears off your.......bumper

and if that didn't confuse you... check out the hrs of service rules here at
    "http / / www . the truckers report . com / hours _ of _ service . htm"
sorry about the spaces but i can't post links yet sorry for cheating

So how does it work if you like to sleep in 4-5 hour stretches and then drive in 4-5 hour stretches. Do you always have to spend 8 straight hours in your bunk?
