the plastic caps do make a difference in the SWR's, K-40 used to make a whip that had a plastic sleeve on it to adjust.

Yep. That's why it tells you in the instructions to check the swr with the weather cap on.

Well I changed up my setup. I took the cobra out to put in my pickup and went with a general lee for the truck. Also decided dual antennas were impractical both for wave length purposes and the passenger side kept catching trees and was starting to bend back. So I'm running a single 4' firestik II clamped to my drivers mirror and tuned it with the cap on and door shut. Those caps are a pita to get back off lol I haven't had the chance ro check it in truly open space yet but the swr's are averaging around 1.3. There is a noticeable difference with this setup. Not sure how far I'm getting out with it but I haven't had any problems talking to anyone I can hear. Thanks for the help guys

A little dish washing liquid like Dawn will make taking the cap on and off easier and washes right off when your done.
