Just started trucking school today at ATDS. The school seems real laid back. They are PTDI certified as well. I have been lurking around on the forums for a little while doing research to see if this career would be for me and what companies treat their employes decent. We pretty much did nothing but paperwork today and I have not seen any threads based on ATDS or the experience so I figured I would oblige. I choose this school over C1 in Fort Worth cause some bad reviews I have read about them, plus they just acted like I was a paycheck instead of a prospecting student. The instructors say they have a lot of experience, and the lead instructor states he has 22 years just teaching at ATDS. They have specific instructors for specific tasks like backing. I will post my daily experience of the school for future drivers looking for a school so they can have an informed decision based off of my experience at the school. So happy reading and enjoy!

Hey heb, I just graduated from ATDS on April 22. Great school in my opinion and I think you will like it. It is a 4 week class so it is fast at first as you will be taking your dmv tests and reading in class and watching videos. My advice is try to study and pass on the first time so you dont have to worry about them. Had a couple in my class that couldnt get it so the spent of time studing instead of practice on yard and driving. All the instructors are great. Gary is a great guy and full of knowledge and is will to go the extra mile to help you. If you have time talk with him and pick his brain.

The second week you will be practicing on the yard (AKA dusty bowl central) lol. You will be driving and practicing shifting, straight line backing, and coupling/uncoupling.

Third and forth week is when real fun begins and you go out on the road. You will be assigned in groups to either Larry or Billy which are the road instructors and both are great as long as you follow instructions and LISTEN. FYI its been said that Billy will throw your cell phone out the window or put you out if you are playing on it instread of watching and learning. I was lucky enough I got to be with both of them for as I had to switch trucks during my road time. Wait until you have to go downtown Waco in a semi for the first time and you get dizzing making the left and right turns while keeping the trailer tires off the curb.

Mike (AKA larry the cable guy) is the backing instructor guy. He is funny and will have plenty of stories for you when your not backing. Also if I was you I would pick the white freightliner for the backing truck lol.

Last week you will go to to DMV for your test. It pretty easy as long as you stay off the curbs and dont stall the truck.

How is the American Best Value hotel?:biggrin_25523:

LOL I can tell you that the motel is ok and I mean that very lightly. I seen about 5-8 way better hotels including a Holiday Inn express that I know for a fact charges what the America's Best charges. Plus if they would tell them that every 2 weeks there is going to be new people staying for a month I am almost certain they would give them a pretty good rate. Hotels love guaranteed business.

Was Richard there when you went? He is pretty chill and a cool guy and Gary is funny as hell and pretty cool too.

Oh thanks for the heads up lol! Yeah I do not think I met a Kyle. That range is SUPER dusty especially with all the wind that will never seem to die down!

Do the trucks have good A/C? Cause it sure is hot these days!

Ha ha Ha A/C I know the two backing trucks do not have a/c but as many times as you have to GOAL doesnt really help anyway. Road trucks do have good a/c. The Volvo's a/c didnt work too well but the dark blue kw a/c did work.

Yea the range on a windy day can be a bit of a challenge to say the least. Luckly I was there at the end of March - April so it wasnt that bad. Actually some mornings we needed a jacket.

OH yea NO shorts. I found that out on the first day also:biggrin_2559:. Gary walks up and says "son you do have pants right? We dont wear shorts around here lol"

Hey also just word to the wise, they will pick the guy in the class with the highest grade point average at the end which i didnt know or maybe I would have tried a bit harder but I still got an A.

Have fun today and keep the sand out of your eyes :biggrin_2559:

So today consisted of going to the DPS first thing this morning to get signed up for the test, and for those who did not follow instructions, get the Class A/R permit. We were there for several hours and that kind of killed the game plan for the day. We then covered the DDC (defensive driving) and went for lunch and finished up the DDC. We will see what tomorrow brings!
