Hello there. I am a newbie. I live in greater Vancouver and was wondering if anyone would be willing to show me how to shift gears on an 18 speed. I would like to know how to do this before I enter trucking school. Currently I hold an airbrake endorsement for my class 5 which will be helpful for my job driving 5 ton but my ultimate goal is to drive the big rigs long haul down in the US and join my Uncle down there. I would be happy going on a long haul run while learning and would be very thankful. Thanks.![]()

Do you have your class 1L yet? kinda need that before you drive on the road...... Also Kinda doubt anyones going to let you hop into there truck and grind gears before you even know what your doing. Thats what driving school is for.
-
suggest you start out with a 9, 10 or maybe 13 speed, to run 18 properly you'll need more experience than a buddy can give you.
KenworthComeUp Thanks this. -
13 speeds the easiest imo and great if you want to learn an 18spd
-
An 18 speed shifts the same as a 13, the difference being the 18 has overdrive or hi in the bottom 4 gears. In high range the shifts are the same.
-
Or do as this old fart does. I drive a girly truck. I love auto shifts
-
I like that idea best, but how do I get hired if I haven't learned on gears. Doesn't one have to shift to pass the CDL.
-
yes, they want to see you demonstrate you can use the clutch and shift.
-
Yup If you pass your driving test in an autoshift that's what you are limited to. -
Don't worry about how to shift yet. You said your going to driving school. That's where you will learn how to shift, and most use a 13 speed. If you can shift a 13, you can shift an 18. The 18 is good for when your real heavy, like most of the loads I pull. 100,000 and up.
