I have a small inverter that has the 12v plug. It comes with a standard outlet I can charge the laptop with, and a USB outlet I can charge my phone with.

If I'm in a hotel, I'll have the laptop plugged into the wall outlet and then the phone plugged into a USB port on the laptop and charge it that way.

I don't know about that. A month ago, I would have agreed with that statement. But since getting an Android phone, I go 3-4 days at a time without even turning my laptop on. It's a lot easier and faster to pull your computer out of your pants pocket. Plus there are apps where I can watch a lot of TV, albeit on a 4 inch screen, but without getting dinged with overage charges. You watch videos 2 hours a day on AT&T's $60 "Laptop Connect" plan with the $503 per gigabyte overage charges, you better be ready to take out a second mortgage to pay the bill. On a smartphone, most carriers don't care how much you use.

I have a verizon droid. theytold me tethering was not supported with my phone that has unlimited data for $30 a month.

I use the app "pdanet" to tether it and have had no problems. I also use "my verizon" app to track the data. I have never been close to 5 gigs. Though I do not download movies or anything, I do stream some tv shows and some other live cams.

Verizion has moved with google to remove most apps that allow you to teather ....forcing you to pay verizion for the extra fee....if you can find an app that works, get it quick!!

Turn on airplane mode, turn on WiFi(need a hot spot), go to the market and download the apps. Enjoy (don't forget to turn off airplane mode)
