Here's a twist..... The US DOT Inspectors were at the railhead today inspecting hazmat loads. 2 of them pulled me aside and checked my stuff.

Dressed in plain clothes but wearing the hardhats with the US DOT logo and emblem they ran a full check on me while outbound with an empty tank. I asked who they were since they had no badge or uniform and they replied that they were hazmat inspectors checking hazmat goods across the rail. ( psst, it's not on the rail bud, this is a truck )

They checked my DOT Hazmat registration, license, med card, ERG guide and shipping papers. They examined the tank for placarding and test dates. They carried a log and wrote everything down.

Might all be routine but I've never seen them before........... you??

I'm paid $40 per load and $00.25 per mile as a company driver with SNI. I'd imagine other carriers are similar. Swift is paid hourly last I heard.

I would have to say that anytime I have dealt with a person representing some form of law enforcement entity, they had ID visible, be it a badge, name tag or whatever.

I wouldn't think most would have a problem presenting it if it wasn't already visible if you asked them to.

If nothing else it would show that you are looking out for suspicious activity, something that the government has asked all citizens to do since the terrorist attacks. If they had a problem or copped an attitude I would probably have to dial 911 & let the local law pay a visit to check them out. I would figure a phone call like that would ring a few bells & somebodies a@# would be in a crack for not ID'ing themselves.

    chalupa and R.Rodriguez Thank this.

Thanks, no, no ID visible but they were working the gates right in front of the rail employees. Not likely a ruse and your right. I should have demanded ID.

The situation really didn't allow allot of bull. Trucks were backed up in both directions trying to access the rail. ( not because of me, just lots of trucks ) and it was after 5PM, again no excuse, just a factor in just how much sheet you want to start. Don't know what their powers were but the perceived threat of being barred from the facility did cross my mind. Sometimes it's better to humor Mr.LEO IMO.
