Maybe I'm missing something but I would not dead head. No need to and Ohio is a great place to be for flatbed freight. Me thinks this is a trick question!!!

Nope I'll clarify it better for you....

Tx to OH 1300 miles for $1600

TN to OH 720 miles for $1500

There is a 600 mile deadhead to TN, which load wold you choose?

D.H. to Tn. Fuel cost cheaper when mty.
Less lded. miles on the trk means less wear and tear.
Still going to where you want to be.
    Leave the Tx. ld. sitting.

Actually I would do the other load. It would take 1 whole day to dead head to pick the load up and result in about $300 to $400 in lost revenue.

they are paying the same, the miles INCLUDING DH is almost the same. Fuel consumption and wear n tear are a WHOLE LOT LESS running empty. thus you are essentially being paid to DH. AND your net profit after fuel will be considerably higher with the TN load.

it's not how much you make, it's how much you take home. work smarter, not harder

    How do you figure?

This is becoming the problem anymore. All these truck radio shows got it beat into these guys heads that laying around waiting on a load is costing you money in lost wages. In reality the cost for sitting is very little compared to hauling a cheap load.

Another thing to consider is the cost of running the truck empty versus loaded. There is a lot less wear and tear on a truck when empty and the fuel mileage alone would make up the loss of the $100 off the rate difference.

A great project, after I hit the Lotto, would be to run a truck for 1 year around the US to see what the cost would be. I really wonder how long tires and brakes would last running empty? Anyone have an idea?

Not sure what to make of that sentence but anyways, I figured you guys would just go in another direction once you realized you were wrong. Have at it amongst yourselves, I'll be in Ohio a day before you and loaded.
