I wonder with the fuel costs, and the way the economy has been the last few years, how the many owner ops either left the industry or took a company job.

Tens of thousands of O/O's have left the biz... either voluntarily or via repossession.

I read last year that there were 300,000 drivers who have left the biz....

The last couple years hit the industry as a whole with many factors playing into. And during a downturn even the best O/O or company can have serveral bad things line up and put them out of business. But at present, if an O/O says the fuel is what drove him under then you can bet that if it wasn't the fuel excuss it would have been a customer/broker not paying or repairs or or or.

And Diesel Dave is correct - business savey.

I bailed in '08 when fuel went to $4.81 a gallon. It was $2.81 7 months earlier. I was getting a nice fsc leaving Ca. but, coming back was usually a joke. The brokers can manipulate the fees easily. My company had dedicateds outbound, but used brokers to get back and we needed to get back NOW, to keep the shipper happy.

Is 85% of the gross on load a fair pay system?

That question has too many undefined variables. What kind of rates does the company charge? Who pays for base plates, permits, fuel tax and insurance? Do you pay trailer rent? What else do they charge back? What type of trailer? How does it compare to other companies?
