we pay the plates. they are a few hundred cheaper then I paid thru Joel. And we pay our insurance but mine is like $300 compared to $750 I was paying before. and a good chunk of y in cost here is workmans comp which I didn't have

 

$1.70 sounds good. For a large company with all the perks and discounts I would say yes but on the margin. For me, I am looking at 250 miles in a week as the BEP when I start making more. But you have other issues that come with being independent. So, if I was in your seat I would have to be very unhappy before going independent. And from my seat would have to start seeing my rates drop below $2/mile over several months before I would look at doing it.
