Yes, this is new to me but I am wondering if it is NORMAL for Carriers to come back with a rate that is anywhere from 20% to 40% higher than the market rate for those loads? It seems most want more.

When you have brokers wanting you to pull a load for 75-97 cents a mile and telling you thats all "in" including fuel surcharge do the math with fuel avg at 2.80 a gal. just the cost per mile for fuel "only" is 56 cents a mile. That does not include drivers wages, fuel tax, insurance, tire funds, maintance, ect.. No wonder they want more. Those kind of rates are an insult to the driver, company, and the industry as awhole. Want to hear a fair rate? Minimum 1.75 mi. plus fuel surcharge. I have brokers paying 2-2.25 mi.. My guys won't even consider a cheap load and will deadhead to get into better freight rates. Any broker that offers a cheap load needs to call the Amish they don't need to buy fuel, the horses can eat along side of the road. OH wait , you can't call them, they don't have a phone.

Reality is that none of this has to do with brokers and everything to do with what someone is willing to haul for. As long as the barrier to entery in this market is so low we will have this issue. I have found plenty of business at my rate. Sometimes I sit a day, rarely DH more than 100 miles to get my rate and never drop below my minimum.
Sure, I get in areas that brokers think I am high for what I qoute. Oh well, I am sure they don't get half of what I am looking for from the customer. So be it. Next. -
You pull flatbed? Whats your minimum!
Im in memphis! Rates in the toilet here too!
$1.75-$2.00 cheap, heavy, tarped.. -
No, I have dry van and looking to get a flatbed. But when I was getting started prices on Flats seemed very high. Been looking lately and starting to see ones in ok shape for less than $10k. Plus I have never pulled one for a long period of time in past so I need to get some education on load securement before I start.
My minimum is $2 but I have a bit of realism with this. If I am going to an area that doesn't see this often I will make sure that I have enough extra to cover DH and/or a lower rate of no less than $1.75. And with the exception of the past two weeks this has worked well for me.
Most of guys I know with flats won't move for less than $2.50 and keep moving. When it is slow they move to a van or reefer.
