Well, I have to say it's been a wild adventure. Starting with the proposal of the guy I was going to be driving for, to hook up my 10,000 lb RV to the back of his trailer. When I saw the homemade hitch he'd rigged up, I decided to finish driving the rest of the 1600 miles myself. Even tho my 6mpg rv just about sucked every penny I had to get here.
THEN I found out that he didn't actually own the truck! He had a partner and he hadn't mentioned to the partner that I'd be driving. The partner wasn't too enthusiastic about that idea, since I haven't had any experience and honestly, I don't blame him a bit. There are trucks on their sides all over the place. This really isn't the place for rookies.
Fortunately, there is boom and jobs are plentiful in Williston. Even tho the ones that really pay good are in the fast food business. Carpenters don't make any more than they usually do, but I did bring my tools and it looks like I've got some work lined up. Enough to earn my ticket home I hope, since I miss my wife and kids.
Yup. Definitely an adventure. I guess I'm glad I came, but all those people who warn you that it's no piece of cake, are telling the truth. At the same time, I have to say I've never seen so many trucks on the road in one place and nowhere to park them.
I'm gonna stick it out here through the summer and hopefully drive a little bit on the side, in a trainer/apprentice type deal and get some practice before winter sets in. I will keep the forum posted as events warrant.
Its weird tho. I've spent my whole life in California, where if you drive more than two hours you're in a whole different topography. Here you can go for days and it's all the same!
But I like it. I am tired of all the rain, but so is everybody. This has been a very unusual year and the farmers are all cryin' cuz they can't get in their fields and plant. If it doesn't dry out soon, there's gonna be some hurtin' families before too long.sinistar Thanks this. -
My input is yes. From what I've seen, the demand for trucks and experienced drivers is still high, even with the thousands of them on the road. And all the rumors point to more wells going in all the time so if you want to go for it, come up and see. If I was an O/O, I'd drive an RV up here, answer an ad in the paper and then fly back to get my truck and go to work.
Good luck!
