Best thing I learned this week driving: ALWAYS call the company you are dispatched to with your load BEFORE driving there.

My GPS sometimes seems to take me into BAAAAAD situations, I had a nightmare of a time getting off an exit in Fargo ND this week that I shouldn't have because my GPS said it was my exit.

Now, I always call ahead no matter what directions my dispatch or GPS may give me and ASK the company I am dispatched to to give me truck safe directions to their facility.

I know that this may sound retarded to you professionals and old timers out there, but I just always ASSumed that the directions my dispatch gave me were the way to go.

So, my advice to my fellow ROOKIES out there - ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, call ahead to where you are going and ask the people there how to properly arrive at their facility. They will be MORE THEN WILLING to help.

I tell my orientation class this every week and I always get someone to answer with, that's why I have a GPS. Seriously, GPS is a nice tool, get a motor carriers atlas, a truck stop guide, and a cell phone. Use them all on a regular basis.

    Google Earth is even better.

I always look at all my shippers/receivers ahead of time. That way you can not only check your directions, but see the best way in, and if they have room for parking, etc. And if you use the street view you can look at the signs and stuff to so you KNOW exactly what your looking for when you get there...

That and a Rand McNally GPS and your good to go. I always call my customers if the GPS and Google earth dont agree with one another.
