It's going to be interesting to see what Shaw offers when they come out with Mobile service next year. I'm betting they'll be pretty aggressive to try and woo customers away from Telus and Rogers.

I currently use an iphone 4. I have 2Gb of data usage per month and never have a long distance phone bill. There are 2 programs I have on my phone you can find at the App Store. They are Skype and netTalk. Skype costs money to call a regular phoneline but Nettalk is free.
I believe I am paying about 30 a year for skype. A 3 minute phone call on your data package is about 1 mb. If your at a coffee shop or truck stop that provides free wifi....then talk until the cows come home cuz you wont pay a cent!!! The carriers coverage in the area your hauling is important - no bars - no cell service
2Gb of usage per month = 6000 minutes
wifi = Free US and Canada calling
I believe you can find these products for an Andriod phone as well.
Hope that helps!! -
I'm with At&t. Canada plan is $99 a month. I can't complain.

If you have an iPhone or an Android and have a data plan look into downloading Skype or netTalk. I have an iphone and currently use Skype. For about $30.00 a year I can make long distant phone calls through my phones data plan....and the phone calls are to regular telephone's.
Also, if your at a truckstop that provides wifi...then your phone calls are FREE. A 3 minute phone call through Koodo on my iphone uses 1 mb of data plan. I get 2Gb per month so that works out to 6000 minutes on my data plan.
Look into the features of todays smart phones...in the end you can save lots of money. Hope that helps.

$135 a month, 2 phones, 1400 min,,, with verizon,move over bell
-
i found the best thing for me was a prepaid verizon i bought at the truck stop. i didnt make many calls so it wasnt much of an expense but was handy when i needed it.
-
Is verizon available up here? Is it a dual US/Canada plan? Havent seen it down east yet if it is??
-
If you have a Verizon plan from the States, you can add Canada (and I think other International too) for about $60 a month, which is cheaper than the outrageous $.79 a minute that they want if you don't have that plan. BUT data is NOT included, and their data packages are terrible.
-
But Skype is still cheaper- About 30.00 a year to call a regular phone line.....and all calls to other skype users are free
