Ok, sitting on the side of I55 broken down typing this lol. Truck is aVolvo 2007 automatic 10 speed. Getting on the on ramp hear a loud thump and knew something broke. Got out and see the drive shaft broke off. What would cause that, was it my fault?

Btw, was bobtailing to the shop to fix an air leak, guess they got more work now.......
-
Doesn't sound like anything you did and yes I am broke down too. Truck shut off coming into Oklahoma city.

Broke off like unhooked? Probably a broken U-Joint id assume. Not your fault. Inspection should have shown a bad joint so it could have been fixed but they do go out and sometimes if youre lucky, you get to watch it fly across all the lanes on the highway..
You should be back on the road quickly. Good luck!newtrucker2011 Thanks this. -
Sounds like the universal joint broke. They fail over time. You should have felt some vibrations for a while beforehand. One of the things that should be done on a pretrip is check them for play. As that would require crawling under the truck I usually only do it about once a week. If you grab your drive shaft and have "play" in it then the universal is usually bad and should be replaced asap.
Nothing major. Happens all the time.newtrucker2011 Thanks this. -
I got lucky I think, I am only 5 minutes from my home office, but still been sitting here over an hour. First thing they say to me on the phone is what did I DO !! So I guess I see them trying to pin this over on me.......

The part that goes into the differential is completely gone.....
-
The u joint is there, just nothing attached to it anymore lol
-
Pinion. umm... Not so good..... I couldnt explain that. For it to come off there would have to be some definite broken parts or someone took the nut off that holds it on and it came apart... And those things are set pretty dang tight, unless someone worked on it recently and didnt put it together right.

It's probably somewhere on the side of the road. The shop will have parts.
