Engines are made to run within a tolerance of clearances, as the bearings wear, these clearances increase to the point where the tolerance is exceeded and the part can fail. Connecting rods can break and bearings can seize to the crank causing a spun bearing and a damaged block and crank that is usually cracked but at a minimum has to be reground. Rods and mains is called by some a precautionary rebuild. There are other things usually done at the same time.

of all the newer engines, detriots are the ones id be worried about, but in the major manufacuter maintence manuals, none of them call for a minor rebuild until 1,000,000 miles or a very high # of operation hours ( i dont remember what it is...evan approximitly)

better materials, quality control and everyone having a firm grasp on PM is the reason i was gave
