My first shaft

    What should I have done? I was doing a live unload at walmart in Cheyenne WY on tue, my DM was working on getting me back to Atlanta by sunday for a few days off i had planned. They gave me a load around 2pm that needed to be in atlanta thu by 1815 for a live unload. I did a pre trip and with the hours i had left that day was about 6 and rest of the week it would cut it too close, I advised her of that and she said they would try to repower me in nashville. So I head to denver to pick up the load and hit a pot hole in denver so hard it made both hood latches release!!! I send in bd and they actually wanted me to bungee cord it! Thats another story, so back to the main one.

    I get the trailer and another driver helped me jerry rig so the hood latches like it should, I get my weigh and fuel and ended up stuck at this pos loves in denver took up so much of my time, I get stopped overnight in limon, Co.

    I send a message that this load cant make it on time, without being repowered again! So she tells me to just get as far as i can! 10-4, I make it to chattanooga 2 days later w 4 hours left of my 70. Also did not make my delivery on time due to my 11, my DM was aware of it and was looking for someone to repower. Now I got to the Petro in Atlanta and sat there since friday 6am, this delivery does not deliver tell tonight 7pm, I am suppose to be in Florida I have a bungaloo rented on the beach for a week!

    So should have i refused this load all together being this close? I am sitting 4 days without pay and they dont want me to idle, and i have to sit and watch tv all day to stay cool!

    Who in the hell do you work for? 90 plus degree heat and they don't want you to idle?
    I wouldn't have refused the load but I would make #### sure that you get the extra time off that you had to spend at the truck stop, then...I'd look for another job.

    Yup, you should have. Once you go under a load you've taken responsibility for it. How come 4 unpaid days? You should be eligible for layover less reset.

    Welcome to the wierd and wonderful world of trucking. Before you tee off on the DM what she said was she'd try to repower. Other drivers may have refused or nobody empty near you. DMs are not miracle workers. Remember always that company priority is moving loads not accomodating your plans. Next time you try this sort of thing, keep your dates in mind and don't take loads that week that will take you far afield. A couple of short loads that keep you within spitting distace of your home terminal will work out better.

    Do you have a drop yard there in Atl.?
    Did you try and see if the local driver could of del. the ld. for you?
    I know some companies charge you a shag fee or however they list it?
    Never Never plan your time off to close.
    This I mean give yourself at least a 2 day window for when you really need to be at your time off point.

    As for the no idle deal, see about them paying for a room or just buy it yourself..

    Yeah, by it being the weekend means that you've already gotten paid so a hotel shouldn't be out of the question espcially if they expect you to be out there cooking like a piece of bbq on this holiday weekend.

    I agree something arranged would of been nice, I hope they dont plan to charge me for what little idle time I have used. Thanks for everyones response.

    #### man, kinda bad luck. Sucks, but now you know what to do differently next time. As some one said above, it's a learning experience. The world is always a learning experience since people can be so different from others.

    Attitudes like this, perpetuated by the masses in the trucking industry is the main reason for turn over being so incredibly high. Thinking logically and putting your emotion to the side, realizing this is a business with fault (like any other) Will put you far ahead in the game. If your the anxious type or the one to jump when it don't look perfect well then you will work for many of the same companies with different names.. :)
