I know the D12 has it's problems, and did not do well with MPG.
I am looking at a 2011 780 with a D13 in it. Are these doing any better?? I know it's a DEF engine, so that's also a problem, but the price is quite right with only 12k miles on the truck (repo)
Volvo D13 ????

You went from looking at a Kenworth to a volvo.
Your lowering your standards quite a bit arnt you? Stay away from the volvo engines, youll be sorry.
REDD Thanks this. -
heres a 09 pete 386 only 312000 miles $
74000. -
Run from that Volvo. It was probably repoed for a reason with 12k miles on it. Probably in the shop and he couldn't afford to make the payments. See another post just in the last day where Volvo wants $48,000.00 DOLLARS to replace/repair the emissions system/engine on a D16. Run away from it, its a good deal for a reason and its NOT a good one either!

SHC, here's some ADVICE, if you want a NEWER truck with good fuel mileage, look at the 2008 to 2010 trucks that have a Series 60 in them. They have a totally different injection system and are far superior than the previous 03-07 EGR series 60's. Stay away from the DD13/DD15. You never see anyone on here whining about the Series 60 from those years. My dad put 400k on one since new, very few problems and excellent fuel mileage. Average was 6.0 to 6.5 these are with a 53' reefer fully loaded, how ever, climbing hills, head winds or when something went a miss with the engine, 4.5 was the lowest it would ever go. There were good days where 7-8 MPG loaded were average. I'm sure if the ECM was tuned you would get far better fuel mileage.

early D13 had cyl head issues related with burned exaust valves, later models are all SCR. yep, new EGR on D13 is good, it is oil pressure controlled and reliable, but SCR system is the pain
-
Hmm, I thought the EGR was eliminated with the SCR? I haven't seen the Volvo website, so correct me if I'm wrong. If Volvo has EGR, SCR and a DPF, that's three strikes VS. two strikes with just EGR/DPF.
-
there were different combinations of emission crap on D13 engines.
They started with EGR (before 2010 engines in the USA and Euro-IV engines in EU), in 2007 they sold Euro-V engines in EU with SCR, but no EGR, later they added DEF and now they make engines with ALL EMISSION crap on! They say they are ready to meet Euro-VI and EPA 2012... OMG, all emission crap on one engine!!!!!!
The best D13 is Euro-III D13, but they are available in ex-USSR. No EGR, SCR, DEF... but for US and EU market "green" engines are available nowIGOR-UA Thanks this. -
Nice truck, but with 312k miles on it, I'd offer them $45k max..... If I am going to spend $75-$100k on a truck, it's going to be brand new. If not, i will just buy an older Columbia or T600 with a pre-2002 S-60
-
It is a 2011 with 12k miles. Repo'd by my local bank because the guy wound up getting cancer and passed away. They are asking $57k for it... so it is worth a thought.
I'm still shopping tho, as I don't care for the Volvo trucks
