our drivers normally only drive around town, however occasionally they will drive out of the 100 mile radius. so at that time they fill out a log book for the last 7 days to show around town driving.
One of my guys says two things that I think are not right.
(1) He says that we have to buy a new log book for each month even if we have only filled out 8 pages and there are still 23 empty pages?
(2) He says that we have to buy a log book, he says that I cant download them and print the forms myself
His claims seem crazy....but this is our governmnent which is not always known for common sense.
Thanks
Granny

There's no requirement at all to start a new logbook every month. None. That's a trucker story.
You do, though, have to use official forms, and if you download from JJ Keller or the like, you'll have the right forms. meaning you can't just make up some document on yoru own and use it as a log.
There are several computer-based log programs that work well, and you don't have to use a paper log - I used a program and kept my laptop out, making duty status changes as needed.Granny Thanks this. -
Thanks,
Do I have to have an official form for the pre trip inspections?
The forms you buy all seem to apply to the big rigs, so those forms have way more than we need.
I want a form for a 25999lb flat bed, but I cant seem to find one.

It looks like the dot gives us the form:
FMSCA Post-Trip Inspection Forms
If you do not currently not have a DVIR form or want to make sure your form is up to date you can find a form that is free on the FMSCA.DOT.GOV website.
Remember, every DVIR must be maintained per § 396.11(c)(2) for three months from the date the written report was prepared.LostOne9 Thanks this. -
In the off season I have had Jan, Feb, Mar and April in the same 31 page log book with out an issue. As long as the form is legal the DOT doesn't give a darn about how your driver obtained it.
I sure hope he's a good employee because he really is a blithering idiot! -
Make SURE that you even need a formal pre-trip for a 25,999 lb truck... make sure you're not using Class A standards for a truck that doesn't meet the requirements - yuo may be doing much more work than needed.
-
Ronin et al,
you are right that I am probably having them do more than needed, but we do exceed the 100 mile rule about once a month.
What standards would I use for a 25,999 lb that drives less than 100 miles?
What standards would I use for a 25,999 lb that drives over 100 miles?
Thanks, -
If you took a 3 month vacation(yeah right, like any of us could afford to!) you would perfectly legal to record those 3 months off duty on ONE PAGE!
-
I just took 5weeks! (sorry I just had to brag) Yep just log it as off duty from 1/??/2011-3/01/2011 and your done! Some company's have different rules about that, mine wants a log filled for every daywith the only exception being if your gone more than 1Mo.
HIJACK!
