I'm curious. What was the last load you hauled into NJ...what were you hauling and where did it originate? Also, what was the last load you hauled OUT of NJ. What were you transporting and where was the final destination.

Last load I hauled into NJ was honey... actually, this was just a few days ago. Part of the load originated in Myakka City, Florida, and the other half originated in Homerville, GA. It delivered to Monroeville, NJ. I had to deadhead out of NJ, to pick up steel coils in Pittsburgh (which deliver tomorrow here in Sioux Falls). Last time I delivered anything in NJ was in 2003, when I was in Swift's flatbed division. It was two Freightliner Sprinter vans, delivering in Paramus, right off NJ4. I deadheaded out of there, as well - had to pick up steel coils from that port under the Walt Witman Bridge. I don't remember where that load went to. Bear in mind, I stopped running OTR in 03 and just got back into it a few months ago, so it's not to say I wouldn't have hauled into NJ more often if I hadn't started driving local.

Based on the limited responses, it seems one has to deadhead relatively long distances to get a load out of NJ. Pittsburgh is several hundred miles ...Paramus to Walt Whitman brige is about 100 miles, Perth Amboy to Philly is 75 to 100 miles. Is that because the manufacturing base has diminished in NJ over the years and there are less physical goods to move out of here?

Prime has a habit of deadheading its lease drivers fairly long distances.

When I was with Swift as a company driver, deadheads were not nearly as long. Since Swift has to pay deadhead miles to L/Os, my deadhead dropped by nearly 75% by switching companies. I have only been to New Jersey once since back with Swift. And I couldn't remember where I dropped that load. I do remember picking up at the port on Philly afterward, though.

(Add) Until the past couple of years, the New Jersey legislature was in the business of taxing and regulating manufacturers out of the Garden State. It seems the only ones left there are those who can't afford to leave. The same thing has happened to Oregon, with its nearly 13% unemployment rate. But this isn't the political forum, so I will shut up about it for now.

Glass yesterday to NJ from Laurinburg, NC. Deadhead back to Laurinburg today and tomorrow I'm getting more glass to take back to NJ.
