    well skunk

I was making aprox 1800.00 per month and all I had to prove is that I still needed the help so you should be good to go on the WIA Program.

Check watkins shepherd they have their own school and they will want you to work for them after the school is 4 weeks and then you get your own truck after you finish school no otr trainer you will learn all of the info needed in school.

    whatsup drivers?!

One thing is to always talk to the driving schools, they most time have an financial aid package. If you try Federal Aid, the school must be accredited through a local college and it's based on alot of factors, income, married, employed, children, etc. You can see if you pre-approve on their website -

    See ya on the road....

In FL, the program has to be 600 hours to be good for Pell grants. The longest classes I've seen so far are 320 hour vo techs, and even the good companies will accept 160 hour votech courses.

I'm not sure what the difference between 3 and 4 week classes are, but the commercial courses are 3 weeks or less and votechs are 4 to 8 weeks: so it must be the student/truck ratios difference.

I wish FL had better information on WIA grants. Half the links on that web page are dead: the ones that you are interested in, ha-ha.

Hi there...Sorry it took so long to reply. The community college was the one that told me to fill out the application on the FAFSA.gov website. Wherever you go has to be designated already to receive Pell money. You could go thru the app process without knowing which school code to put in until the end of the app, then you HAVE to put one in. Look, I made 35,000 last year, no dependants at home either. I qualified for the whole amount of the course which was $2900. If I would have made less last year, there would have been other monies that I would have qualified for that would replace the income I will lose while I am in school. Take a look at the site...this is a FEDERAL program, not state...I wish you luck. Hope it works for you.

Hi...I found that when I registered, there was a 12 week externship. That is how they get around the requirement for 600 hours. The course itself is 160 hours over 4 weeks. I am going to Marten and both they and the college are fine with me being employed while satisfying the externship. FYI.

WIA smells like freedom for me. If also get VA for classes, then could really spend every minute of day applying myself to votech school. Pell grant not sure about yet, but it will just reduce WIA whatever allowed. WIA lead time may bite me though. Hustling to figure this out before end of day. tick tick tick...

Thanks Shortrookie, I'll start looking at that site and try locating VA rep too. Jacksonville Votech would be great as well. I think any votech is good. The 3 week commercials do have guaranteed placement though which is nice, as well as knowing the difference between good and 'shot' equipment which might save your life sometime.

This site is a savior with the different experience levels and teamwork of newbies racing against the clock. Learning a lot here even if don't make deadline.

    ----------------------------------------

Well no VA. :biggrin_25510: No Pell because have undergraduate degrees. Looks like a lot of time on FAFSA site figuring that out. But Roadmaster school on the weekends don't sound so bad, lol. It has inherent advantages. Its up to the student in the end, and rterguy617 on Roadmaster Driving School thread seems pretty knowledgable.

BUT Vets get preference on WIA, my last and biggest assistance hope. Hee Hee, I might figure a way out yet. Only need ONE way, any way and almost any school will work!! Now I need to figure out how to get a 40 hour job in 3 days per week going to MFT or go to Roadmaster on weekends and work 60 hours worth during the week. No more Friday night wrestling : o (
