Why is it the insane "what if" about lawsuits? Heck, I work in the industry and I'm not that paranoid.
If you OWNED the truck, or you have permission to use the truck for personal use, it's the same, and you can use it as you like. If you get into an accident, you're off-duty, and might as well be in your own car - insurance covers the accident if you're at fault - if you're not, the other guy's do.
Truckdave.. I respect you, spar with you a bit, and generally enjoy reading your posts, but this unbelievable level of paranoia is wearing me out.
No line 5 for personal use on elogs

Yes, but so what? Businesses are the targets of (frivilous) civil suits on a regular basis. It is simply part of the cost of business ownership. If one cannot accept that fact, then they need to be an employee of someone who can... or live in a bubble.
Being in fear of engaging in a legal and reasonable activity that could possibly result in a civil suit if there were an accident is ridiculous. Being appropriately prepared for such a potential event is prudent. Appropriate prepardness would include things like knowing that you are operating within the bounds of applicable laws, regulations and industry best practises. I have successfully owned and operated a number of businesses across a variety of industries, some where the peril of a lawsuit is very considerable (higher than this industry, IMHO) and I have had very little concern regarding law suits.ronin Thanks this. -
I just don't see the need for the "but what if you get sued??" posts after EVERY SINGLE SUBJECT involving trucks and driving.
tracyq144 and TankerYankr Thank this. -
Bending what rules? Where, oh where, is there even a hint of that in this thread?
"The regulations" spell out the fact that personal use of a CMV is perfectly aceptable.TankerYankr Thanks this. -
I am quite confident in saying it comes from nothing more than truck stop diner talk, "I heard..."
Well, that and watching too much T.V.ronin Thanks this. -
I really don't get it, but then, like you, I have had considerable interaction with lawyers. In addition to some family and friends that are members of the bar, I owned a financial planning practice and had a lot of lawyers (as well as many other professionals) for clients. Talk about law suit peril... handling their life's savings and the market tanks.
trucker_101 and ronin Thank this. -
Right, I like CSI (all three of them), too, along with Law and Order, etc... and I work in the industry... but still, with ACTUAL IN COURT EXPERIENCE, I'm not nearly as paranoid as at least one person here, who has likely never met a lawyer, seen the inside of a courtroom, or ever been served/filed upon. Please, the drama is getting old...

WHEN YOUR NOT DRIVING AND ON PERSONAL TIME, YOU SHOULD BE OFF-DUTY PERIOD!
-
Well, yessir, you are - but there's some regulation on using a semi for personal conveyance.. but it's not very strict, and yuo don't have to worry about getting sued for running to Walmart.

I AGREE WITH YOU ON THAT ASPECT
