I drive for Windy Hill out of Eustis. Plant loads out of Florida, unload yourself (which is really just bringing the plants to the rear of the trailer and the customer does the rest). Most of the plant loads are multiple-stop loads (and every stop after the first pays $25 plus mileage). Then it's usually paper products and US Mail and whatnot 'til you get back to Florida. I live in Dunnellon.
Older equipment, some of it is downright ancient. They don't hire teams, but there are a few. No New England, no Canada or Mexico. Mostly Midwest and South.
It's a small company with big ambitions. They take students out of CDL school and train for a few weeks, they offer health insurance at rates that are actually sane, and pay into your optional 401K, too, unlike most of the big companies that hire newbies.
It has been a mixed bag, but I just started here and apparently freight is kinda slow this time of year anyway, compounded by the "hope and change" making things even leaner these past months. They use outside brokers frequently, and that' makes things a little more random.
Out 3 weeks, home 3 days ordinarily, but you can stay out longer (and they prefer it).
Prob'ly a good place for a Florida newbie to gain enough experience to qualify for the cushier local and regional jobs that require 2-3 years experience.

I work for Martin Transportation. (That's Martin - not Marten)
They have a terminal in Tampa and are hiring for two different job types.
1. OTR. Their version of OTR is not the same as most companies. You'll be gone 2-3 weeks but will find yourself working locally for one of their terminals a lot of the time - usually for a week or so and then take a load somewhere and start working out of another terminal. You will get to stay in a hotel on occasion and once you're away from home for 14 days they pay a 10% bonus to your base pay/mileage/load pay. And while away from home, if you need to reset, they pay you $120 to sit on your read and watch HeeHaw - or whatever.
2. Crude Oil. This is what I'm doing. They fly me to Corpus Christi, TX and I stay here for three weeks at a time (going to change it to four weeks - my choice) and then they fly me home for 6 days off. I get the same bonus & reset pay as I mentioned above and I get paid by the load. I'm in a sleep truck for 4 night and a hotel for 2 nights. I'm averaging around $5200/month take home. I make two runs per day. The hours are long, around 13-15 hours each day but the money is good.
If you're interested shoot me a PM and I'll get you the info.vmaggs Thanks this. -
Jackmann,I will give you my experience with Heyl. Just keep in mind I have only been here 3 months. They start you out at .35 com regardless of experience, they pay more for short runs(ex.151 miles-$80) but they are not common. They are a long haul company, most loads are over 1000 miles. The equipment is good,I have a 2009 Volvo with 323,000 miles. Not a lot of sitting but it is reefer freight.

Luzon , thanks for the great post on the Texas oil boom. Martins website doesn't say what their qualifications are, do they hire Neewbs out of school for OTR? Do they train or is strictly 1-2yrs exp?

try sending Luzon a private message.......

We are with J&R Schugel. We live in the Bradenton/Sarasota area and we have had tons of trouble trying to find a company that wants to hire south of I 4.
