Yeah, it was bound to happen sometime. After a very busy couple weeks i had a load of bird seed to head from Fargo, ND to White City, OR. When backing in to the dock at the Big R store in White City, I scraped the inside of the open trailer door on a protruding metal bar right below the padding on the dock door.:biggrin_25510: I had never encountered a dock like this. on each side of the bottom of the dock door, partially hidden by the padding, was a protruding metal bar, with a metal plate on it. With a reefer trailer, and their wider doors, properly backed in there is only two inches space on either side. :biggrin_2551: (I was off, about one inch to the left)

Needless to say I was pissed! Why in the hell is a dock designed like this. the only thing the metal could do, is tear up trailers. grrrrrrrr! Well, I sent in the message, and knew What May was going to say. They said that "I should have got out and looked first." Funny thing is, I DID! I was just looking for obstructions on the ground, and above the dock, not partially hidden, right under the padding! Oh well. Unmfortunately, this is one of those "Live and Learn" situations. From now on, I will walk up to each and every dock I'm about to back into, and look for any unusual obstructions.

At MAY, you get three strikes and you're out. So this is already strike one. GRRRRRRR! At least it wasn't a moving violation, or hitting any other vehicle. It tore out a 6 inch by 12 inch section of the door panel and insulation. May sent me to a local shop in Medford, where they patched it up. After getting back to the Brooks terminal the next day, they added some caulking to complete the repair.

So, taking my lumps like a man, moving on, and being more aware.

Coming up, Driving the Hell Highway in washington state........

    Happy Driving, :biggrin_25514:

If you're ever sent to a town called Omak, Washington in winter beware! I had to pick up a load at the Home Depot dist center in Salem, Or. They were late getting me out, and left me only 9 hours to do a 9 hour drive in perfect weather. Of course, this is a week ago, when a winter storm was hitting the Washington-Oregan area, Plus it was a night drive. Had to deliver at 8am in Omak, WA.

Driving through the "Gorge" on I-84 was crazy. THe snow was falling so thick, that I couldn't even see the road. I just hugged the center wall and kept a going! the weather cleared for awhile, then by the time I was in upper Washington, I was on a tiny little highway, WA-17. the farther north you go on that road, the smaller it gets. Plus, as I found out, it seems to be the last to be plowed. I was trudging through about four inches of snow, over a very curvy road, with a cliff on one side, and a lake on the other. Actually, I'm glad I couldn't see what was on either sidfe of the road, or I might've stopped. Only found that out the nerxt day on the way back. On the final stretch of this highway, had another driver letting me forge the way, and he just followed my tracks. There were no reflectors to be seen, blinding snow, and I didn't dare stop for fear of getting stuck. I just aimed down what I hoped was the middle of the highway.

After all of this, was only an hour late. I hope I don't get sent there again anytime soon. I'm sure it's beautiful in summer, but, now? AAAHHHH NO!

Since that run, was sent back down toward california. Finally got to see the Yolo yard. Or Dirt and Mud yard, as it is. dropped a repower there, got another load from Modesto to Woodland, then a run to Coastal Pacific in Ontario, CA. If you ever get sent there, don't plan on getting out anytime under six hours!

THen another Home Depot run from Redlands CA back to Salem, OR. Dropped that load Wednesday night and headed back to the Brooks Terminal for a 34 reset. I was running very low on available hours. Tried to sleep in this morning, but was woken up by a guy from the shop saying i needed new steer tires. Ok, He said pull it in in a couple hours.

I guess that's good, If you're ever parked in the May Brooks lot, the tire guy checks the tires on all the trucks parked, and let's you know if he spots a problem.

Anyway. New Steer Tires baby! Can't complain! My 34 ends in the am (friday) at 7am. no new dispatch yet, hope i don't get stuck here much longer than my 34. but, there seems to be alot of drivers here right now, so who knows.

Werll that's all for now. Happy Driving all.

Go easy in the snow WYo, they don't give medals for guts in this industry, just walking papers. You won't get fired for parking to wait out a storm.

Those kind of docks have been around i think since man put trucks on this planet. I've been driving for a while and still cannot figure out why they made those docks. There is another type of dock that will tear up a roll up door that will get a local ltl driver in trouble. Imagane when you are in the dock and you have your dock plate tripped and the lip is on the inside of your trl. now weld that lip straight out and pull out of the dock and that whole dock plate is now sticking straight out, well on these docks they have a bumper under the dock plate and a little forward of the lip so when a trl. backs in, the trl. will hit the bumper first and as the driver is backing in the dock the plate goes up and then lands inside of the trl., well with a roll up that will tear up the bottom of the roll up door. So the next time you see a trl. with the bottom 2-3 leafs a differant color or newer you will know why.

Wow dude,I may have passed you along the way somewhere.
I was in Omak that week fighting the storm too.
I had drops in Ellensburg,Ephrata and Omak.
I had to throw iron on highway 97 between Goldendale and Toppenish. (Satus Pass)
Hwy 17 is a beautiful drive in the Summer,it's great riding on my Harley but not much fun in a truck during a blizzard lol.

Hi Clutch, thanks for posting your travels. I found your May thread after posting on the Ladies board. I'm a trucker's significant other (girlfriend) and my bf has been driving reefer and refridge for May since October 2010. He's western 11 with an occasional extra pay load to Mexico every once in awhile. I dont know his truck number but he's based out of Phoenix, Az for now. He does alot of trips up the I-10 to LA and the I-5 in Northern Cali.

Reading your blog has helped me understand what kind of day he goes through in a bit longer run. He runs 2-3 stops a day depending on destination. I help him when I can and mainly when he asks via telephone calls. He doesn't have internet connection in his truck so I provide the weather reports and road condition restrictions, address clarifications when he wants them. I'd like to think I'm helping in some selfish way. We don't get to see each other too often. I'm finally getting used to the distance and long times between when I do or don't see him. We don't have kids yet, and I work full time plus school so I can keep myself busy most times.

I want to go on a run with him but waiting till he transfers to local yard so I can sortof be guaranteed to do more of a local run/short haul so I know when I can be home. I work 3 days and get 4 off, figured I can go with him then since I know I wont miss work.

I must say I'm more curious now than ever after reading your post and sometimes wish he would do some sort of log like this... Its interesting reading for those unfamiliar. Granted he does not deal with the weather conditions of the 48 states but we have some wild weather in northern cali and oregon border thru mount shasta area that can cause some problems as well as i-80 thru the sierra's. I've even thought about getting a CDL so I can team drive with him, but I always come back to my pets. I have a puppy and 2 cats, with school and a house to maintain. they are always what ifs but i'd love to go on a run with him when I know i'd be back in time. I know we could take our puppy with us but the cats don't do well after a week or two with feeders and litter boxes and a friend checking in on them.

So thanks for the post, and I look forward to updates as I have subscribed to this thread.

    Thank you..

    Sharon

So you found a company that worked better for your situation it sounds like. Being home on the weekends is something that you wanted. You would not get that at any of the companies that you mentioned in your post. They are all otr companies. I'm glad you found a company that works for you driver. Otr is not for everyone.
