Duck's beat me to asking the "burning" question. Thanx for the explanation, Canuck.
Now I understand why Ron beyatches about them so much.

Because the stacks stick up higher than the box, and can be destroyed while trying to enter some docks.
Or in my case, its because the truck came that way, and to modify it to stacks would cost too much money.Ducks Thanks this. -
Or on a aerodyne truck if you pulled a flatbed. So you can put your headache rack closer to the sleeper to have more room. This and the car haulers would be the only reason I could see. I have a KW T800 with one stack behind the sleeper and if I went to pulling a flatbed I would have to put a weed burner on because my headache rack would stick out so far and I wouldn't be able to turn with a trailer on.
Ducks Thanks this. -
Usually on car haulers. The reasoning is that as a weed burner the exhaust will not be dumping the soot onto the shiny autos they are delivering. Dealers prefer that you deliver cars they dont need to detail from truck exhaust.Ducks Thanks this.

Doesn't the exhaust odor migrate into your cab as well?
-
Weed-burner exhaust is also common on transfer dumps in big fleets. Reason is for hauling asphalt, its loaded under silos, and some of the older hot plants have 11' clearance or less. Beats the crap out of antennas, let alone stacks. Most o/o have stacks, because they look good, and most all choose not to haul asphalt, because it sucks. But you dont see many transfers in truck stops, either.

on a flat bed truck with rear cab exhaust--just need the right headache rack---if you buy just a plain old rack --yes it can be a bit out--but you can get off set racks for singal exhaust or racks to go inbetween dual exhaust--now that you stirred up my memory--i have switched shaker single exhausts to the side of the cab to get the headache to sit nice
i suppose they definately have their spot and reason---but i still dont like them at all -
Is it safe for me to assume that if I see a big truck without stack/s, it is a 'weed-burner'?
-
pretty much so---or else a low clearence bridge has a pair of stacks stuck to it
another good idea is to not follow flatbed trucks under an overpass or bridge that isnt mark for height
especially some place like pittsburgh---seems most of the steel haulers use very short stacks for a reason
and in the north east--on the old side streets the trees beat the crap out of the truck and trailer and stacks---sometimes you can see a chopped path thru the branches giving you an idea of which part of lane to be inDucks Thanks this. -
When I owned the hydroseeding business most of our trucks had weed burners because we primarily worked from the top of the truck.
But we never stayed in truck stops and we never idled..canuck in da truck Thanks this.
