Hi everyone.
I got my CDL (including passenger and school bus endorsement) back in August of 2010 and I've been driving schoolbuses since that time. I wanted to drive trucks but I had to take the bus jobs because they were local and I was wrapping up the sale of a business I owned near my home. Now I want to find a job driving OTR, dumptrucks, intermodal, etc; anything with non-touch freight.
But the problem I keep running into is that I need to drive automated/automatic trucks because I can't use my left leg in driving (due to a prosthesis). However, all the companies I have applied to tell me that, even though they do have automatic trucks, they will not hire anyone unless you can drive both automatic and manual transmission.
Can anyone point me to some companies where this would not be a problem or give me some advice? I need to drive a truck because bussing does not pay well enough for me to pay my bills.
Thanks.

I know companies get tax incentives for hiring new employees. Possibly there are also those available for hiring handicapped folks.
I know there are societies that will help you.
Soon other will reply with companies that are all autos. check them out.

this should NOT hinder you for a job but can you see their point as well.??
for instance, US Express has automatics, but they are also getting rid of them slowly. i have a former student that works for them, he has a stick shift and loves it. however, US Express no longer wants the automatics. it comes down to how best they can use a driver. maybe today you have an automatic, but then the truck breaks down and they give you a stick shift.
try going online to the following companies and inquire with a recruiter as to what they have
Waste Management
BFI
CRST
JB Hunt
Cardinal
Swift
Celedon
Werner
Trans Am
Boyd Bros
TSMT (tri state motor transit)
TMC
Maverick
right now out of the ones i listed, i cannot tell you which ones have full automatics or automated shift trucks, or stick shifts.
good luck, and by the way, at the top you see where i put 2 waste hauler companies...many times for "city residential routes" they DO HAVE automatics.
best of luck, and inform us as to how you do. -
When you go online most of the major hiring board like bubbajunk.com and everytruckingjob.com have sections where they outline the type of transmissions they use. Also maybe start a thread on this forum for companies that use automatic transmissions and I'm sure there's plenty of ex drivers that will make your selection go smoother..Hope this helps and good luck!

Check your local military bases. They have CDL jobs that pay near union scale and are almost all automatics. They are used to working with disabilities too, since they hire a lot of vets.
