Hi folks,
This may be beyond any novice repair but I got this radio for free so if it's within my capability I'd like to see if I can get this bugger working.
The radio is a Uniden Pro520XL sn. 893005322 mfgin Taiwan. The Ch. lights work properly and I can hear the familiar "pbt" when keying up, but no signal with a known good antenna within proximity of 50 ft of the monitoring rig.
I've taken the case apart and cursor look at the pcb there's no sign of burnt circuits or broken connections.
My interest in this radio is that it fits in a moulded console in the ceiling of his van. This 520 has a conventional 4 pin mic connection that is desireable, His 510 he kaputted by thinking the mic connection was a twist type when actually it was a 6 pin half moon type.
Has anyone else here tried diagnosing and repairing these little radios? Or should I just forget it?
Thanks and a lift of the lynch lid for your response.
Uniden Pro520xl kaput?

Best advise I can give is to trash can it and get another. I have seen them for about 40 bucks or less in the truck stops.

AGREE
not much you can do with a $40 radio.
BTW Good morning Rat -
Just as this is kind of a gift for my friend when I get it done, this project will give me experience in dealing with desoldering components from PCB and resoldering. I figure the more experience I gain, the less time I have waiting for my radios to get back from the shop.

Last year Pilot truckstops had a Midland model 1001Z compact 40 channel radio on sale during July for $30. It may be to your advantage to wait and see what goes on sale for July and August. I assume you are not pressed for a radio for immediate use.
Turbogus Thanks this. -
This radio is junk. Within 6-months your channel selector will go. It will spin and wont' change the channels. If you need a small rig, go with the 520-XL or 19-DXIV.

I got the power transister out and I need to clean up the circuit board but that I'll have to do with some wire and my soldering tool as no one single hardware, welding or electronics store in this area has desoldering gear.

The reason I'm sticking with the 510/520 is that the conversion van's headliner consol juuust fits this radio's case. If I went with another maker it'd have to have the same width and height. Lots of depth room though, it's so deep I could fit my 53W in there.

I do understand you reason behind sticking with this radio. There are alot of people that like this radio do to its physical size. The only thing is that this radio is so cheap that it is what I call a "throw away" radio. When something goes wrong with it it is usually cheaper to just toss it and buy another one. We have one driver that uses these radios. he gets out just as well as the other drivers using the bigger chassis cobra and uniden radios. It has less knobs etc to deal with and he don't really care. Heck I would nto care either becuase once I have my stuff adjusted the knobs are just extra clutter to look at. The only two knobs I use, after initial adjustment, are the volume and squelch control anyway. It would be nice if this radio had a removable rubber plug over a pot to adjust the mic gain up just slightly though.
I am thinking that with the time/effort and money involved with fixing it, you could have been better just to swing into a truck stop and pickup another one off the shelf. But some people like to tinker and that is fine. I do it sometimes also. My wife gets mad at me sometimes for fixing cheap crap that I could have just replaced. I look at it as keeping my brain working. She calls it wasting time. -
I hear ya Rat,
I normally go the replacement route on small ecletronics, but as time goes on I like to take things apart and just see what I can do. So often I get lucky, by the Grace of God and it comes to fruition. So much so my wife got me a Life's Good t shirt "Mr. Fixit" hah!
As backup I've got another 520 comin' from Uniden for my buddy. This one so far has set me back $9 for the pwr. transistor, and $3 for some desoldering braid. Got the latter from Radio Shack after they told me they had no desoldering gear on the phone.
Gotta love the next generation kids that have no work ethic.
Got the new transistor in place (had to trim the pins and custom bend them to the board) going to try my hand at soldering up and testing today.
