DEF is really nothing but fertilizer. In a pinch you can use water.
Alan -
Hi Alan, I saw your post (cute maltese!) and thought I would chime in about your comment on water. I work with Air1 which provides DEF to the US. We see that a lot of people have questions about DEF, and are helping to answer them. There are issues if you use water, as it can cause a mineral buildup and block the system. If the system blocks, that can cause your truck to go into crawler mode, as the On Board Diagnostics kick in knowing DEF isn't being used. If there are other questions, or extra information needed, I'm happy to answer any other questions on this topic.

Trainer and I had to refuel DEF with both jugs when we got the red warning light indicating we were low, less than 1/8th. Truck is brand new and had about 2800 miles on it. We were scheduled to refuel in Lake Havasu but were 100 miles west of Albq when the warning light turned on. We pulled over and poured the two jugs in which brought us up to less than half. We had to make a makeshift funnel using a folder and electricians tape. Lesson I learned is to make sure I have extra DEF and a usable funnel. Truck is a new Pete.

Thanks on the Maltese. I have three of them. You are very correct in what you said. But in a pinch short term very short term use.
BTW we are one of the carriers for DEF

Looking forward to staying in touch. Which Company do you carry for?

Hey GeorgeT - in Europe we noticed different articles being used as a funnel, so we included a funnel as part of the packaging. If you use your own funnel (or any other DEF filling equipment)- use it only for DEF. Don't use one that's been used for oil, diesel, washer fluid etc. The system doesn't like contaminants, as they can cause a buildup, and blockages.

Is that true? Do drivers really use water instead of the DEF?
I also heard about this SCR delete kit or software from another driver but I don't really know what it is. Can anyone explain it? -
I also wouldn't mess around with delete kits, either. These kits do just what the name says - bypass or eliminate the DPF or other emissions controls on a diesel engine. The upside is that you're supposed to be able to gain some horsepower from no longer having emissions control devices providing that backpressure on the exhaust system. The downside - these kits are intended for off-road use only, and running an on-road diesel with the emissions controls bypassed can net you some HUGE fines if you get caught. "Delete kits" usually consist of exhaust parts (to bypass the DPF) as well as software (because changing the exhaust also changes the engine's parameters, so you're going to have to retune things a bit). If you're curious, here's a website with some examples of "delete kits": Spartan Diesel -
For the O/O's using DEF, you can use distilled water instead. No, you're not supposed to- but 2.5 gallons of distilled water at Wally-World is cheaper than DEF in a truckstop and your tank won't know the difference. You didn't hear it from me...
