Ideally after sitting overnight to get a good accurate reading , but not always possible. I shut it off to refuel and when I am done then I check the oil level , fuel bay is nice level spot ( most of the time ) and it only takes a minute or 2 to check .

I appreciate the advice. its just difficult finding 20-30 min to let it totally cool off and drain. I don't park the truck overnight as my wife drives when we switch. if we take time to get loaded/unloaded, or shower, we leave it running because its #### hot and we have our puppy in the truck who needs a/c. This is why i don't check the oil often enough, its just a pain in the butt turning the truck off.

I think i'm just going to have to make time at some point, since we're usually a couple hours early delivering each load, ill just stop at a rest area for 30 min and get this thing checked out properly. thanks all

even just shut it down while hot at shipper--take the dog for a walk--should plenty of time to get a good reading

I am sure that taking 20 to 30 minutes to shut it off will not hamper your team operations too too much or inconvenience the puppy.

I drove team running coast to coast and always found time for a PROPER oil level check.

ever see trucks set up with a oil tank under the hood --for having to add oil?--just have to open a ball valve and there you go

i think it might have been an ex cat truck i saw this on

Had an old 379 years back that used so much oil it smoked.

A guy asked what I was hauling in the tanker , told him ENGINE OIL , he said he noticed the smoke but did not think it was that bad.

A hot engine really only needs about 10-15 min to get an accurate reading, plain & simple.By the way over filling can be a real big problem, worse than being a little under! The dipstick has a range to be within for a reason,it does not have to be to the top all the time!

If you are on a level surface, and can open the hood for a 10 minutes and the oil level is below the ADD mark, and it is hot, you can add some.
If you have checked the oil when it is cold and do a scheduled run and stop, check the oil then you will know what the level is when it is hot.
Do not overfill it but keep it between the add and full mark. When it is cold out keep it near the low mark and when hot near the full mark. You want to know that the oil pan level is correct, many of them are not that is checked when the unit is serviced.
    Just a thought!
As a mechanic I would check the oil and everything else under the hood before starting it, I have added 19 Quarts 20 litres to get oil on the dip stick, have had people come in for no heat that had nearly no coolant in them, and I went on a service call for a no start complaint it had been started 255 times with low coolant and would no longer start. I had one trucker when told the radiator was empty tell me he shook the truck and could hear it sloshing. I have tried and tried never could shake them properly.
When you can look it over, look under it, it could save you butt.
    Have a good day!

My truck uses a gal of oil every 8K or so. The company shop allways overfills by at least a gal, so sometime after 12k I start to add oil, after the second gal I know it's time for an oil change.

The thing is, since you are running team, you should be doing over 4k a week for driving, so adding 1/2 gal a week, to me, would be normal.

    just a thought.
