Many threads on this. Here is the most current one. http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...tor/146401-advice-needed-3-5-truck-fleet.html
Spend some time reading and your broad question should get answered if not narrowed a bit. -

Filings are about 2-$3000. Figure about 3-4 weeks to complete. Then downpayment on insurance, cost of your truck/trailer etc. You'll need backup $$$ to run on and for unexpected expenses. Payment from brokers take awhile unless you do a quick pay for a fee. You can run independently or lease on to someone. (with or without a trailer). Watch out for sleazy brokers who "disappear" on you.

On an interesting side note, I wonder why drivers never ask what are the disadvantages to being an owner/operator. Just saying, I was no different with stars in my eyes on my first truck/trailer purchase. Using borrowed startup capital during the interest rate boom of the late '70's. The one that even put many real estate operations out of business by the '80's. Now as I look at my third purchase, I find myself looking much harder at what is not good and what will most likely go wrong.
