I'm currently at orientation for KLLM for a possible job doing coast to coast. The only reason why I seem to be here is they seem to have a good hiring pay rate and I need the experience. The problem is I've only been here only a little more than 24 hours and I can't stand it. I'm missing my family way too much and knowing that if I am hired that I will be away from them for six weeks or more. And with my job history it seems like I might not get hired at this point. There are local jobs available such as working for waste management, a cement truck co or doing asphalt/dirt dumping.
The question is, would it be worth it to leave here and work local and how would I approach the orientation manager in regards to this?

OTR is rough when you have a family, that's why I try and tell everyone to talk, talk, talk about it. can you finish school and still get a local job? My hubby worked local, 6axle dump, he made pretty good money for 2 years, but then business went really stale here - he had to go back OTR. It is a decision we had to make for our family, but we still love him. Hang in there and don't make any quick decisions - only you and your family can make on this big - talk to them. Good Luck!

You will get the jitters at first as this is all new to you. Talk to an older driver with experience there,it will help you decide what is best for you. Don't throw away your driving future unless you are certain that you don't want it. I know alot of drivers that have went thru that including me when I first went away. If you have never been away from home its hard on you,if you have been in the service its a little easier as you kind of know what to expect. If you are almost certain its not for you, just tell them and go home and start from square one. Nothing worth having comes easily however,do what your good conscience tell you and follow your heart and you will be fine, either way, whatever you decide to do,let us know,be thinking of you. Best of luck either way.

If your girl is still upset and worried over all this, make sure you take time with her when your home. Talk, and shower her with affection. OTR isn't for the weak, and if your family is having a hard time, make sure you talk to them. Have her get on her, she can put her 2 cents in, talk to some of us other trucker wives and also learn along with you what trucking is. This site has helped connect me to my hubby in other ways. I see that his point of view is like most of the drivers, and i learn a little about other stuff too. Have her sign up, go to the ladies room and we'll welcome her and give her other ladies to talk to (and it gives us someone else to complain about you guys too. ha! ha!) Good Luck - glad to see you stuck it out!!..............................Lori

roadhog actually she was the one that posted the question on here i didn't have access to a computer or internet at the motel and I've talked with her she says she doesn't want to deal with me leaving not that she cant she doesn't want me to go but its for the future and she realizes it she wanted me to go local so she called like 20 places and no one would hire without a minimum of 4months and thats when they had openings but i do plan on taking her with me she thinks she'll never see me again but i had explained home time to her she's just worried about the 6 weeks of training its straight 6 weeks no breaks i get home when i get my own truck but ill see if i can get her into the ladies room to at least read some posts

Hey beezle - tell her we've all been there and learning to deal with it daily. I never thought when I said "I do", it meant DOING everything, 3 kids, the house, yard, you name it. But after 4 years, I'm getting used to it. I wouldn't ask Tim to do anything else - he loves it and that makes a happy family on this end......Good Luck and tell her if she needs to vent (truckers aren't always easy to live with or without) or just talk, I'm here! Good Luck Guys!!
