Hello all! Finally have a good paying LOCAL job hauling crushed cars from Grand Junction CO to Denver CO. I was hopping to get some useful advice, tips and tricks from some of the experienced ones here.
I'll be hauling crushed cars and occasionally recycled aluminum cubes on a 8' x 48' flatbed spread axle. Currently, the loads are secured with wire robe and chain/chain binders. As well as a wire mesh that goes all the way around. I have 9 months worth of flatbed experience 7 years ago. So I'm trying to get back up to speed on everything in the flatbed world.
Also, Is the tractor supposed to have a headache rack if there is no bulkhead on the trailer? Been trying to look this one up but cant find any requirement in the Regs yet.
Thanks in advance!
Looking for advice from experienced crushed car haulers

I think they did away with the headache rack requirement, I think.

I haul crushed cars from No Cal to the Bay Area. You don't need a headache rack. Not needed. No chains or binders. But you 3/8" wire straps. That's whats required here in Cali. Plus, you need 4 straps per bundle to secure the load. Also bring a broom to sweep your deck. You don't want pieces of debris flying off your trailer and hitting drivers.
This was my 1st load:

3/8th wire to secure that on a skateboard? That is beyond frightening. If I came upon that rolling down the highway in front of me I would pull off at the nearest exit. I wouldn't even risk trying to pass.
Where I am at they haul crushed cars in dump type trailers. -
3/8" braided wire is ok by CHP/FMCSA. Some are hauled hi side dump trailer. Trust if me FEDS didn't ok, it nobody would be doing it. plus if saw how it was secured, u would be a "happy camper".

Plus we got the CHP and DOT crusing the interstate looking to enhance their coffers.

Yes, 3/8 inch wire on a flatbed with the mesh screen is what my former employer used. I never hauled them that way, but I did haul them in walking floor trailers. That was pretty nice. We didn't even need to tarp them as the load was below the top of the trailer. Really easy, just open the doors and walk them out.

Ca. is a little strange sometimes. 3/8 wire to tie down crushed cars is OK as is truck rope to tie down pallets of cinder blocks with metal V-boards.

Nah....I look at it this way, My truck doesn't say "Garbage Hauler" on it so I don't haul garbage!
