KW Radiator lower pipe replacement

    Anyone ever work on or replace this pipe in the photo below?

    I was told this can be a really bad thing to do...the pipe is beyond corroded but was told the studs that hold this flange in are "pressed in" and splined and over time they rot and when you turn the nuts, the entire stud turns and strips inside its slot.
    This in turn causes a huge radiator repair bill....

    I have been putting PB Blaster on all 4 nuts each day and plan on doing that for about a week...

    The studs are actually welded to the bottom radiator tank and it would be a great idea to heat them up. My dad used to run an '87 KW and it only had three studs holding that in and it didn't leak. Good Luck!

    I wouldn't do it without a set of torches. Get the nuts glowing RED before you even attempt loosening them. If you mess it up you know what the consequences are...

    I'd be very uncomfortable with red hot glowing nuts on the tank. I think that's a tad bit much ??
    But I agree with heat....

    i would get them good and hot and then try it--all you need is one flat or so good and red--that way it will give it expansion room in the nut and brake up the scale holding it tight
    they will be crappy to get off tho--i think old stars were kinda like that--think i might have broken one or 2--just take your time--work it back and forth tight and loose with lots of weasel piss and it should come off

    I have feelings.... If I put my nuts on a tank until they got red hot glowing..... I believe you'd hear me screaming!

    What's the concern? The studs are welded so obviously the lower tank is steel. I'd be far more comfortable useing too much heat than not enough.

    The studs are supposedly splined and pressed fit aren't they?
    If they are welded then I shouldn't have any issue either way.....

    for that matter could go in with a torch and nip the nuts off as well
    but i think he wants a less invasive procedure
