Good luck, I can't wait to hear about your solo run. Swift is a company that I am considering myself.

So to all the people following this thread.
I'm shopping companies right now, got one fender bump (no damage) on my license that will be off as of August of this year (was in 08 ), other than that the speeding tickets I had were more than 3 years ago.
I'm looking to make a new start, been a single dad for way too long. My son just turned 18, and trying to find a place that will train me, I know I can pass the learners portion of CDL to get my permit, but I'm broke, and after being a single dad since my son was born, I have a spotty work history, including nothing for the last few years (thank god for family) As I had to focus on him in his teen years. (running away, drugs, etc)
Actually took him to Vegas with a friend of mine as I got a gig to sing in a band but that lasted about 6 months and I was back in Minnesota.
So anyway I'm 35 with a (soon to be) clean driving record, no felonies, no work history for the last couple years, can pass a drug test, perfect vision, I don't mind running my butt off as I am currently single and my son's on his own now so I don't have to worry about family/home time etc... and frankly anything I make is gonna be an upgrade from what I've been getting by on now so I'm not super concerned with starting pay.
Should I wait out till August so the last thing on my driving record is gone, or would that be ok? I have a feeling so far the work history is gonna be a bigger problem, though I won't apologize for doing what I needed to do for my son.
the OP seems to be documenting starting with SWIFT with already having a CDL, how is their CDL training school these days, heard conflicting stories... Anyone else know other places that are better, heard horror stories of Stevens, and great stories about PRIME, though the prime recruiter hasn't returned any of my calls. So I haven't talked to anyone there yet.
Roehl says they aren't hiring in Northern Minnesota but if I want to move to the cities then they'll "consider" mehehe... not sure how keen I am to move away from family on the off chance they'd hire me. I'm glad to be away or even relocate if I HAVE a job... but till then...
Sorry for so many subjects... I'm leaning heavily towards swift if their training program would accept me... especially if PRIDE doesn't ever get back to me.Stevens' trucks sound amazing and I suppose I haven't given them a fair shot, just because of the horror stories... hmm...
Anyway, sorry for the rambling... any advice appreciated... especially, to keep it somewhat on topic, about Swift... though I'm open to hearing about anyplace else as well! -
No new update Love2Shift????? BBOooooooooooo........LOL. I finally made it home today for a "real" reset and jumped online!! Hope all is well and still looking forward to your solo update.
Maybe they are keeping him extra busy and plenty of miles right out the gate???? -

My advice would be pick the carrier that YOU are happy with and apply. ANY company, esp the ones that train are going to have horrible reviews. They are likely to also have good stories, but which will out weigh your brain?
You can read all the threads on swift and the others here and make your own mind up, but I personally would rely on phone convos to get an idea of the company. Ask 20,000 questions.....if they are offering answers then great, but more then linkely they will give you the "sales" part of bringing you on!!! Don't listen to what they want you to hear, you need to hear what YOU've been listening for!!!!
Anyhow.......do the personal research of who hires in your area and that trains, then 1 by 1 go through the list and apply!!!!!!

Thanks!
That's basically what I'm doing, it's just been slow going getting anyone to answer the phone, maybe it's just my weird hours or bad timing.

Again, good luck!!!!
ps- Love2shift needs to tighten up with those updates, LOL!!!!!!!!!!! -

Update:
Well my days with a mentor is over, finally. So let me give you a run down on my thoughts while in training.
Its not that easy getting along with someone, especially when you have to live with him/her for six weeks. The best thing to do is keep it real with the mentors, their there to help you and believe it or not, your there to help them (money wise). With Swift training l believe that only company drivers should train so that the new drivers will know exactly how company drivers operation runs. Things were very hard at the beginning, most of y'all who been following since I started this thread know what I'm talking about. I quit twice, was going to get off the truck and find another carrier. However if this is something you want to do, then you have to go thru hard times to get to the good times. If there is someone in training now are starting don't give up, I know it can get very frustrating, but keep focus on the big picture. Run hard if you want to finish early. It took me 33 days to completely finish 240 driving hours. When I got to my home terminal for the road test, two other drivers told me it took them 7wks to finish. See my mentor got coast to coast loads. I drove 11hrs everyday, sometimes especially when l was only 20hrs away, I drove eight straight hours with no break. I'm not saying wear yourself out, but let motivation push you to finish. Please hang in there (thanks to the ones that told me that).
So know that I'm done with my mentor, l have been home for ten days awaiting a truck. (not getting paid)... So know I missed two checks because I haven't worked. My driver manager is out on his vacation for another five days. So getting my own truck is still not upcoming. I heard this was the long waiting part so I'm not to surprised its taking long. Thanks to this site for letting me expect a long wait for a rig. My DM keeps pushing me to go team with someone, to be honest I'm not ready to live on thee truck with someone eles right now, my mentoring was enough. I know I can make more money going team but I want to try this on my own for awhile.
So liked l said I'm still home waiting for a truck to come available and its rally taking longer than i thought. I would love to give an update on my first solo run, hell I'll love to go on my first solo run NOW! -
I was going to post this somewhere eles but since I already befriend most of you I need some help from log experts. Being that I'm here home waiting a truck, is there any way I can log all this time and days on one log sheet? If so how?
