Are E.O.B.R required for independent operaters? Hearing rumors that everybody has to go to them. Then I look around for info and get even more confused. So what is the latest on this?

Nah...
OOIDA is whining -
Truck owners are whining -
DOT is unsure how to log in -
Congress is heading into an election cycle.
It'll be a few years yet! -
I would tend to agree. A big election cycle is coming and they have already stirred the pot with what they have done or proposed so far. FMCSA might pull a EOBR mandate stunt, but not for a while. And the Senate bill that would mandate EOBR is not moving. And it would also have to clear the House as well.
-
Not to mention this would then have to head to court. And being truly objective on this and not just stating my preference, they don't have the data to force this through. The big companies that agreed to this and did not fight knew that penalties that DOT could give them would kill them compared to EOBR costs.
And the funny part, we are starting to see the first wave of data from companies that have these and they do not look any better than before they installed them. -
I have to start using them here at QC very soon. Luckily, on my dedicated gig, it doesn't make a difference. But I still don't like them
-
Seriously have to agree and hopefully quell some of the worries.... in an election cycle, everyone is sidetracked while trying to fight for the next president/senator/governor. Then the lobbyists weigh in and there's a long, drawnout fight... then if it is passed, someone files suit and keeps it wrapped up in court for the next 4 years.
Not anytime soon... not going to worry about it. -
I have been using one (qualcomm) since about mid December. Hasn't really been an issue. Hasn't hurt revenue. The thing is not going to improve safety for anyone and should not be mandated for everyone. I don't mind it in my current operation, but can visualize a lot of problems with others like livestock haulers. It will never be a one size fits all solution to anything.
In some ways, I find it rather convenient. No paper, no worries. And no problem being able to move the truck even if hours out. Just go off duty driving and bobtail around to do whatever I need to. Not for everyone and it shouldn't be forced on everyone.
But like most have said here, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it being mandated any time soon. The world will end some day, but it is not one of my daily concerns.BigJohn54, Preacher Man and panhandlepat Thank this. -
Cowpie1, I believe you are correct. I oppose it based on the gradual loss of our freedoms and rights. I don't think it will be a deal-breaker or make the roads any safer.
I believe those who trade freedom for security are neither free nor secure. If I knew who to credit for that saying, I would. -
The CDL was enacted 25 years ago.
Today, it still hasn't accomplished what it set out to do.
I wouldn't worry about EOBR anytime soon........ -
BigJohn54 Thanks this.
