It is looking good for me to make my comeback into trucking with GTI. Just waiting on a couple little things from my job history to come back and I know these won't be an issue. I plan on running 48 state solo and I had a couple questions.
1) At this time what are the odds of getting one of the newer trucks with an APU?
2) Do the non-APU trucks have auto shut off to keep me from idling for comfort?
3) Do the solo trucks have a second bunk? I plan on bringing my folding bike. It could easily sit in front of the passenger seat but I'd rather have it out of the way.
4) Dose GTI have any problem with using small cigarette lighter type inverter for running laptops and such? Last company I was with you would get fired for even having one.
5) What are the odds over time of moving from dry van to being trained on other systems (refer, skateboards)
6) What are the miles looking like at this time?
OTR Solo questions....

1., 2. It is possible that you will get an APU truck starting out, but, just as possible you won't. The non-apu trucks do not have the idle time limited. Prove yourself and you will be moved up quickly.
3., 4. Nearly all trucks have the 2nd bunk. Inverters plugged to a power point are not an issue. Don't splice any wires.
5. Your choices are Reefer, team, or dry van. Start with what's available and then moving is possible based on need. A productive driver will get preference.
6. How well you manage your log will control the miles. Hometime makes a difference too. I take all the hometime I have coming (1 day for 6 out). I run 31 days for 5 days off on U.S. fleet and average over 10,000 per calendar month. If you have hours they will get you loaded, not sitting and waiting.buddy_bill and BigJDub Thank this. -
Looks like you and my hubby will be starting with Gordon about the same time....
It looks like your questions have pretty much been answered by Yatista...and from what I know (as a former Gordon emplyee's SO and a soon-to-be-again) he's right on the money. I know that Valley Freightliner (adjacent to Gordon in Pacific and also owned by them) is going through the Gordon fleet and turning the older rigs around (as used for sale) about as fast as they can replace them with newer rigs. And all the newer ones are getting APU's.
Your truck will most likely be a Freightliner Columbia or Century and will have 2 bunks. Lots of room for solo drivers.
I noticed that Yatista neglected to mention the Heavy Haul out of Clackamas (Portland). But if you want the longer runs stay with refer or dry van. No skateboards with Gordon.
They are a good company to run for and I hope you enjoy working with them.
buddy_bill and BigJDub Thank this. -
the older non APu trucks do have 5 minute cut outs, but you can just flick the cruise control to bypass it.
The newer casscadia's 10000 series do not have top bunks because of weight. and the APu's have major electrical issues on all casscadia. and no way to bypass the 5 minute cutoff. and the 10000 series run def. talked to a driver and he said one tank last up to 6000 miles. to do something like reefer you will have to call your dm and ask about training for it. call Jamie x4447 who is pretty much in charge of orientation, and he will help you find the right person for training to get started. and if your orientation was in PAC then you know Jamie then.BigJDub and buddy_bill Thank this. -
I have yet to go to orientation. I'm hoping to be picked up soon the recruiter I have been chatting with says things are nearly complete on his end. Just waiting to get a form back from my current boss and I know everything there will be good.
Thanks for all the info. If I get picked up I'll be working out of the Medford yard as its only a couple yours away from me.
I forgot to ask but how safe is that yard for long term parking? I don't drive a new flashy car but that doesn't mean I want it messed with either.
I was told I might have to out with a trainer for a couple weeks due to my time out of the truck and that's fine but I'm coming ready to roll with all my old solo OTR gear that I plan on leaving in my car till I get my own truck. I'm not a big home time junkie. I have a few bills I want to knock out before I relax and take time off so I hope to go out solo for a few weeks before I go home for the first time. -
The Medford terminal is fenced but no gates at the front entrance. The employee long term parking is inside a separate fenced area within the terminal. I'm not sure about Medford, but, most of the terminals have night security and are well lit. GTI will allow you to stay out as long as you want. 2 weeks or 2 months is ok with them. Normally you can only accumulate 5 days of hometime.BigJDub Thanks this.
