I tend to think you did the right thing. I could call anyone, and claim to be anyone.
I had a scammer call me one evening, he said he was a bank I actually do business with, and asked for info similar to your caller.
He got all huffypuffy when I asked him how do I know you're who you say you are. He gave a number to call back, uhuh, sure. I just hung up.:biggrin_2559:

He should have told you the name of his company if he's a o/o. I would have done the samething. The scammers go after anyone they can. If you have his number on caller ID jus google it an it might be tied to is company. But personally he seems like an #$$ so your probably better off.

It's a judgement call. If I didn't feel comfortable with it I wouldn't do it. I see mixed signs. A plus, he spent a long time on the phone. A minus, he contacted you. Big red flag, you don't know him or his company name. I wouldn't do it, if I couldn't research his company. But then again he may not be a part of the company name he gives you.

For the future, I would exchange phone numbers and hang up telling him I would fax it. Quickly search Google, TTR and FMCSA. If that passed, call back and tell him I'm having problems and read his fax number off one digit. That would cover for the time and allow me to verify the company number and that he was at that number. Just a thought.
