I don't drive commercially in the states now days, I will be in 2 weeks...I started trucking with Stevens Transport out of Dallas, TX to get experience but then I came back to AK. I recently left of my great job with Schlumberger pronounced- Shlum-Ber-Jay, its a oilfield service company, I drive Peterbilt 378's hauling specialized trailers of different sorts. The pay is excellent, I have never had such great pay, but I am tired of the weather it gets down to -100 degrees F. Also the company would be cutting our hours from 16+ hours a day to just 12, which would dent my annual pay quite significantly; So I will still be taking a pay cut by driving OTR in the states, but I get warm weather, cheaper living, and I love truck driving and try to ignore all the negative things that happen in a truckers day to keep sane and happy.

If one were to drive to Alaska from the lower 48, what's the best route through Canada?

I have driven in my own POV to Alaska, I went thru Montana to get to Alberta, Canada when I drove from Utah, but I am not experienced or knowledgeable enough to voice an educated and helpful opinion. go to mapquest.com and type in wasilla, ak to cedar city, utah and that will show the route I will be attempting in 2 weeks, in my dodge neon, my car hasn't let me down yet, so we will see. This will be my 2nd trip going thru Canada, and I think it will be nicer, most of the road construction on the Alcan highway is complete; Paved and less chance of losing tires to rough terrain.

As long as we have them folded up they never give us a problem about it. We keep them strapped to the bumper like that on all our trucks, as do most of the guys around here who run a lot of over sized stuff. Where do they give you trouble? In Maryland? If so maybe I should take it off the next time I run to Baltimore.

Well, a lot of the construction companies down this way leave them on, although they aren't supposed to. Some of them have the metal hinged type, and on most of those the lettering isn't regulation size.

I don't think it would be a problem to leave it attached empty if it isn't readable, like you are doing.

Welcome to my world. For all of you that can shut down every time there is a flurry, I say "have a good nap". I don't get that luxury. So if you ever wondered what it looks like for me when you are sleeping, Here it is. (BTW, I have never had any type of accident).

Well if that's the CASE you need to be here in the winter months when we send out 100's of trucks in the nastiest weather ever.
Sometimes I wonder why they don't shut this TERMINAL down when it get's real bad...but HEY...WE GOTTA RUN!:yes2557:
